Gave in to Miracle Grow again

After making many phone calls to nurseries/garden centers and finding out that they won't have their shipments of Promix BX or Fafard until Feb. and the few stores that had Promix BX left wanted outrageous prices for it. One local nursery wanted as high as $58.95, another wanted $49.95 and the largest nursery wanted $39.95 but I'd had to drive about 20 miles for it. My husband got upset with me when he heard those quoted prices but all the time I spend calling around for availability and price quotes. He reminded me that I'm only growing these flowers for my own personal self, not growing them for sale at a farmer's market. Kind of knocked me back to reality. So I mixed some extra perlite in with the original MG that I purchased at HD and even added 1 c. of seed starting mix. We'll see what that produces. My Homer bucket holds 5 gal but I mixed up a total of 35 c. of potting mix to 7 c. perlite and 1 c. seed starting mix..Now I just sit back and let Mother Nature work its magic with those seeds!

Wow!! Yeah I was complaining about 5 bucks for 8qts!!! LOL

 o
RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

Lots of folks use it pippi, it will work fine.

Thing is, if you figure how much you're paying per cu ft of MG, chances are you are paying just as much as you would for the ProMix, maybe even a lot more, if the ProMix was the compressed bale. A compressed bale is over 7 cu ft expanded.

1 cu ft = 30qt. So you need approx:
If 8 qt MG= $5, you need approx 4 of those $5 (8qt) bags to equal 1 cu ft. That's $20.
To equal the 7 cu ft of ProMix, you would need 7 times that.
7X $20= $140 for MG,

Is that not correct?

RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

I just bought some promix from Lowe's, 2 cu. ft for $15.

 o
RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

The Promix BX was that 3.8 cu. ft. bale..Lowe's here in our area only carry Scotts or Miracle gro..which is also owned by Scott's. I think I paid $9.29 for the 1 1/4 Cu. ft. of regular Miracle Gro..Now that MG Moisture control bag is 1 or 2 cu. ft. for $12.99

RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

I just looked at the bag, it's a compressed mix, loose it says it would be 4 cu. ft.

I was just so happy to find it, I would have paid anything. The MG also came highly recommended by a botanist that taught a class I attended on propagation. I planted some housplant cuttings in it, and they are doing superb. It's a bit lumpy for my liking, but if it works, I'm game. But.

I like Pro-mix better :))

RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

gardenunusual, where did you buy that ProMix? I've never seen a compressed bale that's 2 cu ft. Can't find anything like that on their website, either. Compressed bales are usually 3.8 cu ft compressed. And now there's a mega bale that's 135 cu ft!
http://www.premierhort.com/eProMix/Horticulture/Products/GrowingMediaC at/mycorise/fBiostimulant.htm

What I've been buying locally is a 2.8 cu ft loose mix. I get it @ a nursery about a mile from my house and the woman sells it to me for $14. A pretty good deal. It's the BX with micorise pro.

I expected everyone to jump on me about my post above
(i.e. equal volumes of MG and PMix, $40 to $50 for Pmix, $140 for MG). I have to say, I knew MG was more expensive but I don't think it could be THAT MUCH more expensive. I'm thinking that my calculations must be flawed? But nobody corrected me???

That is flawed somewhere, isn't it? Or does MG really cost more than twice what ProMix costs?

RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

Karen, I purchased it at Lowe's in NH. Believe me, I was shocked and stunned to find they had it.

My local garden store is only carrying the MG, right now, and they don't know what they'll be getting in the spring, otherwise I would have bought from them. The same garden store does have last year's Pro-mix, as a bale, for $26. The only reason I didn't go with that was I wasn't sure it would fit in the trunk of my car.

 o
RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

gardenunusual - I bought 3 compressed bales of Fafard last August, all 3.8 cu ft size. One went in the trunk; one in the driver's side backseat & the 3rd in the front passenger seat. It's 9 mi from the nursery supply to my house and they were all fine on the ride home. Just tipped them out onto my little rolling garden stool & wheeled them inside the garage. If they'd been outside & frozen, I couldn't have moved them. The price runs about $3 - $5 less per bale than Pro-mix.

RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

I was spoiled my first year wintersowing. I went to Home Depot and under the snow outside found two pallets of the "holy grail"... 3.8cf compressed Pro-mix that everyone had recommended. It rang up at $4 !!!!, yeah so I got 4 bales which is all that would fit in my car. I went home and tried it and loved it. Went back a few days later to stock up and it was gone! They said they won't carry it anymore and that is why it was on clearance. I have not been able to find it for any price, anywhere the last few years. I was so stupid not to buy all I could right away and will be cursing myself for it til the day I die :) My last words will probably be "my only regret is not buying all that $4 Pro-Mix" :)

This year I found that the local Menards carries the 1cf loose bags of Organic Pro-Mix (for $7-8 I think). I got a few of those to try and it looks good so far. I thought it was weird that this was the only Pro-Mix I could find. When I Googled it, I found this is one of THE potting mixes of choice for marijuana growers!

RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

I used pro-mix bx last year. This year I'm trying the Sun Gro
Sunshine Mix 1. It's cheaper and just like the pro-mix. What
I do is buy it in the late summer or fall and just save it until
I need it. It still is a little expensive 32.99 for a 3.8 compressed
bale. Did you check the feed stores?
I still use miracle grow for my earthboxes, but I add vermiculite
and fertilizers to it also.

RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

Gardenweed - I would go with Fafard's hands down if I could find it. So far, I am pretty impressed with the Pro-mix. I didn't know if it was compressed bales my favorite garden store had. This bag I got at Lowe's, I just rolled it into my trunk, it was so heavy. Hubbie was supposed to load it indoors because I need to get these containers I have prepared off my kitchen counters, the wintersowing is taking over, lol. I left it in the trunk of my car for a couple of days, and it actually was lighter when I took it out last night.

RE: Fafard or Pro-mix

The pet/garden center where I bought my first frozen bale of Fafard last November told me it's the same formula as Pro-mix but isn't as widely known or recognized. Both are made in Canada if I'm not mistaken. Seeing the fantastic results I got with it, I can't see any point in spending the little bit extra for the PM even though both are available here. There is a commercial nursery supplier about 9 miles east of where I live so I just drive there in the summer to stock up for next year's winter sowing.

I hear you about the winter sowing taking over--I have bale #2 of Fafard in the kitchen along with the bucket I use to mix it and fill my containers. There are milk jugs strung on bungee cords hanging from kitchen chair backs, seeds & tiny ziploc baggies on the counter along with bubble wrap, labels, paint pen, tweezers, wax paper & Scotch tape. A guy at work is saving me spring water gallon jugs as are several neighbors.

Oh and in case anyone is interested, we're down to 61 days 'til Spring.

 o
RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

Wow, bungee cords. I'd love to see that!

I had to move some stuff away, as my plans are to keep sowing, but kids and life get in the way.

Woo hoo! 61 more days!!!

Including some, conservative ones of my kitchen counter.

RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

lol this thread has too much math...i'm out of here!

 o
RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

those of you who do use Fafard, which formulation is it? Growing mix #2 or Growing mix 1-PV?

Found a new location that has both Promix and Fafard, and the Fafard at 3.8cf would be $10.00 less than what I was paying for Promix! I do need another bale for annuals so have to buy something!

 o
RE: Fafard Growing Mix

The printing on my Fafard 3.8 cu. ft. bale says Growing mix #2.

 o
RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

What's so bad about Miracle Grow?

 o
RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

kvenkat-I agree-not sure what's so bad about MG (I've used it with great success), or what is so much better about these others. . I'd be curious to know the difference.

 o
RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

The math (you really only need to figure out the price per dry quart)

Pro Mix: $40 for 179 qts (3.8 cu ft compressed bale)
$40 divided by 179 = $0.22/qt

MG: $~11 for 64 qts
$11 divided by 64 = $0.17/qt

YMMV.
I haven't bought a bale this season yet, but last year I found it (Lambert's brand) for under $25 (up from 18.50 the previous year) at my local grain/feed store. So my local per quart cost is ~$0.14.

There is nothing "bad" about Miracle-Gro; what you use is simply a matter of preference. It is recommended that you use potting mix, but there are folks who use potting soil with no problem.

Me? I loved Miracle-Gro, until the bags I got were becoming more and more full of sticks and stones. I think they must sell different formulations to different areas, because others I've spoken to don't have the junk in their Miracle-Gro. In the last few years, I've found and switched to Fafard, which reminds me of the way Miracle-Gro used to be. Very satisfactory.

Last year, someone bought me a big bag of MG, which I've been using this year for WS. Same sticky, stony stuff, with an extra added feature - it will NOT get wet! Takes days! So what's up with that?

RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

I don't think it is different formulations. I think sometimes due to either demand or incompetence Miracle Grow bags up incompletely composted product, which is why there are more sticks and bark and such. The more mulch like the soil is, the harder to get it wet and have it retain moisture.

I only buy "heavy" bags. Light ones usually equal less soil-like. I've also taken bags back to the store when they are more mulch than soil, usually to Home Depot. They've always refunded my money and I wait until they get a different shipment in before I get any more.

I find that Miracle Grow bags are more mulch than soil more often toward the end of summer and very first thing in the spring (which are probably bags left over from last fall), which is why I think it may be because demand pushes them to bag stuff before it is really ready.

If everyone took the "bad" bags back and got refunds, word might get back to Miracle Grow to improve their qualilty control. But then again they may not care no matter how often ther are Internet discussions of how uneven their quality can be.

When their stuff is good, it is very good. But when it is bad......stinks is the nice word for it.

RE: Gave in to Miracle Grow again

Thank you pvick and kimka! This is very interesting. I have learned over the years that the quality of merchandise from the big box stores is not the same as that provided by the smaller retailers. A faucet from HD is not the same quality faucet as that provided by my local plumbing supply house, even when it is the same brand, make and model. My plumber told me about the letter that is added to the big box store UPC code to identify it as big box merchandise. The item may sell for less, but the manufacturer needs to make their profit, too, so they cut corners in quality and production to get their prices down.

I have to wonder if the same thing is happening with MG coming from big box stores. I've noticed the sticks and stones and a few plastic chunks myself when buying there, but when I bought a small bag of potting soil from a local shop so I could make a terrarium, it was the quality I remember-soft and silky, runs through your fingers easily. I'll keep this in mind in the future, especially about bringing it back.

mmqchdygg-it took me a minute to figure out what YMMV meant! Your math may vary, (depending on your local prices, I'm sure). Thanks!!

kimka - thanks for the wetting info. i've returned bags of MG to the store (usually HD), but it's such a hassle that i simply stopped buying it. last year, when i asked a friend to pick up a bag of soil for me, i neglected to tell him - "NOT MG!". poor baby, i didn't have the heart to make him take it back. once i get the stuff wet, it's not really a problem - my seedlings are coming up nicely in it. good thing my WSing is limited this year, or else i'd go mad!
