How many milk jugs can you fill with either a 1 or 2 cubic feet bag of potting soil mix? Would 25-30 milk jugs to 4" depth be about right for a cubic foot of potting soil? I figured a cubic foot = approx. 25 dry quarts, but once moistened will reduce in volume, so 1 dry quart will make one jug when moist. I'm planning for a 4-H workshop to teach kids how to winter sow and am trying to estimate the amount of potting soil to request as a donation from my local hardware store. If you've filled jugs recently from an unopened bag that would be helpful. Corrine

I'd just over estimate !! I am sure you can use the rest of the soil up. If you can get a compressed bale of Promix that would be great. We get donations like that with no problem from our local garden centers for our Elementary School garden you just have to ask the right person. They may have a damaged bag(s) that they would like to get rid of. Don't get the stuff with miracle gro in it as you will only grow algae !!!

There has been much dicussion about this over the years -- you might try searching around. I THINK the year I kept careful track I was able to get a good 100 milk jugs filled by a big bale of Promix. I usually do about 300 containers (milk jugs and slad boxes) and, yeah, 3 bales of pro-mix.

I have filled 100 gallons, 33 half gallons, and two bins 10x15x5 with 2 1/2 bags of potting soil that were 1 1/4 cu plus one bale of promix compressed 2 cu
