Need WS seed advice for class

I'm doing a winter sowing class for our special needs students. They will also be sowing the same seed in the greenhouse, and then compare & contrast the results. I'd like to sow a perennial that will bloom the first year in the spring. I thought of dianthus deltoides - does anyone have any other seed ideas?

Viola tricolor, AKA Johnny Jump-Up. Easy fast bloomer with a really happy face.

There aren't very many perennials that will bloom first year, especially in the spring. If you can try annuals, I'd suggest Clarkia.
