| This is the second thread in the official Winter Sowing Container Count (affectionately known as Zone Wars).
The count runs from December 22, 2011 - May 1, 2012. Everyone is welcome to participate! To participate you simply post on this thread the number of containers you have wintersown. You can post daily, weekly, etc. Each time you post, please include your total count so far. For example:
How To Count Containers:
How to List your Zone:
If your member page does not list a zone, you must include the zone in your post. For example: If your member pages lists you on the border of 2 zones (such as 7b/8a) you need to decide which team to join for Zone Wars, and include it in your post. Or you can revise your member page and put 7b from now until May 1. Then after May 1 change it back to 7b/8a.
Everyone who is winter sowing is encouraged to participate.
Chatting, support, suggestions, and friendly rivalry are encouraged.
Every container counts so join the fun!! ~Happy Sowing~ |

|
| 19 more for zone 6 my total 213 Looks like we are getting smacked by zone 5 & 6, no problem it's the process and all in fun I doubt I ever do this many containers again. I will probably end at about 300-400 because I haven't even gotten all my perennials in that need stratified, almost though. |

Zone 5 has surged ahead and cemented a solid lead, but it's early in this race. Keep sowing, everybody! PS Does anybody prefer the summary aligned left or centered? | i sowed 26 more today for a total of 51 |
|
| Terrine, I insist that the container count summary be presented in a diagonal array starting at the far right. It must be double spaced with varying font size and style which must be changed every week. I would prefer colors in earth tones and the numbers should be 3 font sizes larger than the letters. If you are unable to meet these requirements, then I simply cannot see how I can continue to be a part of this project. This is a joke. For any who missed it, Terrine asked if anyone prefers the summary centered or aligned to the left. I couldn't care less. Terrine, please do what ever is easiest for you. I'm just grateful to have someone willing to keep track for us. We're spoiled that she checks in every day. Happy sowing. Martha |
|
| Good morning, I was able to do 25 more containers before the water went out. Today, hopefully I will have running water again and be able to do a few more; running out of January seeds to do, so might take a break and clean the house and do all that needs to be done prior to February's list!! Terrene, I like it centered personally - the way you have been posting. It makes it easier to find when the page gets long; but whatever is easiest works for me too!!! Total: 197 (Zone 7) |
|
| hello I didnt winter sow last year due to our move, but I'm jumping back in with both feet. I dont have my seeds in yet but most of my jugs are filled with soil and ready to go. I will be cutting some blinds into plant markers today and post my jug count as I seed them. great page thanks michelle |

Zone Wars Summary: Zone 4 . . . . . . . . . . 78 Total Containers: 2,551 Good morning, winter sowers. Welcome new sowers Clc70 and Micyrey! Clc70, you sure have boosted zone 8 in a big way and your fellow zone comrades are no doubt happy about that! Docmom, you had me giggling! I think I'm going to keep the Zone Summary centered. It looks nice and when I checked the thread on my son's iPhone, the centered text is a little easier to view (taking into consideration all the winter sowers out there with smart phones, LOL.) |
| Whoa, zone 6, what's up? Where is everybody? Okay, okay, I know I shouldn't be talking, as I haven't sown a single container yet, lol, but I usually don't until February, and we're usually doing better than this! Gee, I was going to scale back this year but I may just have to do my part and sow even more! ;) |

| I know Dee we are going to have to recruit some peeps |

- Posted by beatrice_outdoors 6a MA (My Page) on Wed, Jan 18, 12 at 6:37
| Dee and Maddox-maybe we should change the count to unsprouted containers? Then zone 6 would probably be WAY ahead of zone 7! Friendly rivalry aside, I do hope all the spouted babies in Z7 are OK and make it through. I still have my sowing in 4" pots to do for giveaways, so I'll be adding more soon enough, but I still can't compete with numbers in the hundreds. I just don't have the space to put them all. Maybe next year I'll do all cups or small pots instead of flats, so I'll get 5 cups for every 1 flat I did this year. ;) |
|

| i am doing kroger band of solo cups this year the clear ones they have, very inexpensive. my husband took drill bit and put about 10 or 15 together and drilled holes in bottom and it works perfect...take a sandwich bag and put over the top, tuck corners and put rubber band around and poke holes in top works perfect. and to boot the names i put on piece of tape and put one inside and one out and the ziplog bags covers this for protection. i'm really liking this but if your gonna plant alot of one plant you would have to plant more than one cup. setting them in milk crates and my husband built a wood square out of 2x4's for me so that they wont blow away. also using one of those long plastic boxes you can get at walmart drilled holes in it for drainage and sticking cups tightly in them as well so they dont blow away. |
|
| also thinking this will be easier to remove the plants just cut along side of cup with scissors and wahlah. |
|
| Monday was a holiday & since the weather was so nice I played in the dirt (what's with 70* weather in January? after last year tho, I'll take it!) Zone 6, total of 50 containers |

Total: 246 Oh, and btw - you Solo cup girls, I heard a song the other day, Solo cups are for drinking beer. hahahaha.... (For my annuals in late Feb and March I use the styrofoam cups - lots of leftovers from fast-food and you can get 40-60 of them at the $1 store) :) |

| This is my first time to report and I have a grand total of 18 for zone 6. Perhaps we should have a backwards count in the spring when we have to start planting them all. lol |
|
| So??? The USDA put out a new Plant Hardiness Zone Map today (http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/) - just wondering if this puts anybody in a new Zone? If it adds more to Zone 7 then I think we should use the latest and greatest - if not; then we should probably go with what we have already been posting as (teehee). Did anybody get a new zone? I'm still zone 7b. |
|
| I like the new map! Thanks for posting that, Ldsluder. I think people who have already posted their containers should probably stick with the zone they're using, since the count has already started. However, if someone hasn't yet posted any containers, they could adjust their zone if they want. Whatever people think is best! The new map definitely puts me smack in the middle of zone 6a, but I always knew my town was close to the borderline of 5/6. No doubt the center of town, where it is more densely settled and there is a "heat island" affect, is zone 6a. I live on the outskirts of town, across from farmland and exposed to strong northwest and southwest winds. My front garden is definitely 5b. Here's a clickable link to the new map. |

Zone Wars Summary: Zone 4 . . . . . . . . . 259 Total Containers: 4,864 Good morning (almost afternoon), winter sowers. WOW, lots of sowing going on this weekend and zone 6 has surged ahead and taken a commanding lead!! Welcome to the count KSimS, nan-6161, and Sandysgarden. Click the Container Count / Zone Wars Spreadsheet to see the container count in detail. "There are many tired gardeners but I've seldom met old gardeners. I know many elderly gardeners but the majority are young at heart. Gardening simply does not allow one to be mentally old, because too many hopes and dreams are yet to be realized. The one absolute of gardeners is faith. Regardless of how bad past gardens have been, every gardener believes that next year's will be better."...Allan Armitage |

| Please add 6 more to Zone 7...my new total is 120! The weather has been beautiful for working in the yard. DH brought in 2 pickup loads of soil for the new flowerbeds we are building. The WS'd babies are going to love their new homes! |

Zone Wars Summary: Zone 4 . . . . . . . . . 259 Total Containers: 4,983 Happy February, winter sowers! We're just about to break 5,000! Welcome new counters Weebay, Ruthz, Ibheri and Sandlapper_rose. And a special welcome to Ibheri, who is a counting for zone 9. How exciting!! Don't be intimidated, but you are the first zone 9 counter of this year, last year, and perhaps even earlier years. A zone 9 counter is unusual (you will have to keep us posted how winter-sowing works in zone 9). Mindyw3, please check your total, I put you down for 14, but the spreadsheet had said 9 before that (which would have totaled 16). Click the Container Count / Zone Wars Spreadsheet to see the container count in detail. |

| Add eight more for me here in Zone 6. My total is now 50! :) Brad AKA Moonwolf |

| Hello all! Newbie here and I have started 47 pop bottles / milk jugs etc since 12/30. Crazy warm weather here so I have held off on doing more but I see that others are going ahead so maybe I should too! And, I'm trying everything while also learning the difference between perenials, hardy annuals, tender ones, etc. This is so much fun! |
|
| Pls add 11 containers to Zone 5. My total is 11. |
|
| Please add 6 for Zone 8 which brings my total to 100. Thanks. |

| I started in January and did three sowing sessions for a total of 64 containers so far. Now I need more potting mix. Every year I tell myself I will have enough mix because I'm not going to do as many containers as years past. I have not been able to stay under my self imposed limit any year so far :) |

| Please add 6 more for a total of 8 for zone 8. So hot here that a mosquito bit me as I was working on the front porch this evening. Sowed sjc48's Coral Nymph Salvia (Texas Hummingbird Sage) that she kindly sent me for my butterfly/hummer project. Thanks again, Shirley! Terrene, this includes the 2 A. purpurascens (purple milkweed) that sprouted in the fridge that I have now moved to a styrofoam cup outside. Thanks for your help! |
