Stunting from crowding?

I'm wondering if you ever see plants that become stunted due to crowding when planting HOS-style. With the native seeds I'm sowing, I see seeding rates and various sources caution against sowing too heavily lest I cause too much competition. I haven't noticed that to be a problem before but now I'm concerned and thought I'd check with you all. It seems like if you were experiencing this as a problem, you wouldn't be planting HOS-style. The pictures I've seen show fantastic results.

Any thoughts on the issue of crowding and stunting plants?

I have never noticed any obvious stunted growth from crowding, but if you really want to minimize the chances of that happening, hypothetically, just snip off the tops of all but the choicest sprout in each "hunk." Then that one can grow on unencumbered.

If seeds are big enough for me to handle, and I expect a high germination rate, I try to plant them about 1" apart to reduce crowding.

I'd defer to seed-specific instructions.
