| Please post here AFTER the other thread is full!!
The "rules"
Please post only NEW containers and not a running total.
Example: If your 1st post is 30 containers and you later sow another 30 containers your 2nd post should reflect only the additional 30 containers.
You can post your total as long as you indicate the number of new containers.
Example: "Zone 5 : Add 30 more containers for me. My total is now 60. "
Remember to add your zone to each post so we can see totals by zone.
I will update the totals on a regular basis and start a new post as needed.
Thanks!!

RE: The Official 2009/210 Container Count-part five

| How do you suggest I count what I did today and how are others counting? I sowed one flat that took awhile. It contained 4 oversized 6-cell packs and 8 4-inch pots. Each cell is about the size of the 4-inch pots, not quite as large. I'm inclined to give a count of 32 but maybe should just count the cell pack as 1 and pots as 1 each; if so, it would be 12. If I sowed directly in the flat with just soil, that I would definitely count as just 1. |

RE: The Official 2009/210 Container Count-part five

| Add 2 more for Zone 5. (I keep getting sidetracted planting seeds indoors) I bet alot of these can go outside, but they always look dry, and it's time consuming and COLD outside to water them all! I probably need to cut larger holes in the top of the containers to let all this snow in. How big should I make the holes in small deli and big fresh spinach containers? |
RE: The Official 2009/210 Container Count-part five
| | |
| You guys got me inspired, it's 1AM and I'm done for now, you can add another 10 for Zone 5. Ran out of potting soil. |
RE: The Official 2009/210 Container Count-part five

NORABELLE You can count the jugs you helped with. **********So if you get your hands dirty, it counts!************** There was some one else who did some with some children or seniors that asked that same question-the jugs did not get added(was maybe in the first or second thread?) let me know who, what, and where and I'll add them! ALISKA Things are kinda grey on what a "container" is so I used last year definition(copy and paste, gotta love it!) What is a " container " ? I will not try to define a " container ". You use your own judgment. here are some suggestions. #1... If you use toilet paper rolls, newspaper pots, plant bands, paper cups, peat pots, etc and pack these together under one cover, then perhaps the best way to count these is to count the number of different seeds sown. Example : 10 different kinds of seeds sown under 1 cover could be counted as 10 containers. #2... 50 seeds sown in a milk jug or other larger container should count as 1 container. Just let me know if it should be 32 or 12. -B |

| Zone 7 : please add 14 more jugs for me! Thanks, Nancy |
RE: The Official 2009/210 Container Count-part five
| | |
| Thanks, brandymulvaine, for the general guidelines. I planted 2 containers of several tp rolls with one kind of seed, counted them as 2 awhile back. Even if I'd put a different kind of seed in each one or divided a 2 liter like I've seen w/same or different seeds, would still still count the 2 liter as 1. They may not be separate when spring arrives but mushed together into one mess lol. So I will compromise and use the "discrete container-within-a-container theorem" which could be argued ad nauseum and ruin the thread. 8 4-inch pots will be 8, and 4 6-cell packs will be 4. I will continue to count each separate plastic cup individually. The tiniest cups would fry what's left of my brains, if used, would count the container they're in only even though discrete, seems more fair. So 12 please for z5 on Feb 14. |

| 34 for z5 today, got an early start for a change. I found in my clutter 4 9-cell packs that are about 2-1/4 inches deep, very compact in my Jiffy trays. Those and others I picked up for free 2 years ago at Restore Habitat after their plant sale. They had tons of bulbs for free, but I passed them up, all different, NOID. So I sowed a packet of my violas in those 9-cells along with some other things to fill out the flat. Total so far is 236, and I counted using my discrete container method, counted 4 for the 9 cell packs and so on. It averages out. |

RE: The Official 2009/210 Container Count-part five
| | |
| Good for you, Rhonda! I'm still working on a few more perennials (and biennials), too, and then should be a lag B4 I start the annuals. When is the best time to start sowing those in our area? I know some of the annuals that are ok to start now. Then I'll try not to clutter the count threads too much with questions but don't see your posts, this is only the second or third one I've seen of yours. |

| I have finally counted my containers - 426 (!) for zone 5 please. According to the instruction, I counted individual cups as "containers" - different seeds in different cups. I hope, I've followed instructions right. This is my first year, and when I started, I went much overboard. I didn't read all info, so two weeks ago, I've planted annuals, herbs and veggies. I'm mentaly prepared that I'm going to have a lot of empty cups. Karendee - thanks for your seeds! |

| Hi Rhonda, you are on a roll now! Late March, that sounds good, give me a breather. I think I've gone off the deep end though lol. Sowed way more than I ever imagined and lots more to go. I hope to catch you on another thread, will bump the Iowa thread so pls watch for it so I don't disrupt the count thread with unnecessary chit chat (some is legit imo). I'm interested in what you are sowing this year and will list what I've done so far. Also curious what admark or the new guy is sowing. |

| Aliska - somehow, I feel, you are my soulmate.. any way, I sow everything. One day, hope next weekend, I'll make a list. I'm keeping packages where the seeds came from. I don't have much hopes (am I "half glass full" type of person, I don't think so..) and whatever will germinate, I'll deal with it. I also have a horrible confesion to reveal - I do sow indoors, I sowed lattuce on Sat and I have sprouts already - amazing. In general, all these garden staff is simply amazing. OK, I know, it is too long for this thread, but I'm simply having fun. Talk to you next weekend, back to reality, Monday is coming... it's snowing here but, I know, Spring ic comming. BTW, I so enjoy all those wonderful pictures, please post them, let us survive those last days of winter... give us some inspiration and HOPE.. |

| 18 for z5 today. 12 cups raspberries and 6 of currants. Yay!!! Thanks so much, Brandy and Bonnie, moved the berries to the head of the line. adamark, somehow I got you confused with nbacres out in western IA. I do that. Sorry, I know we really connected on a couple of threads, but I have trouble remembering nyms and the corresponding zones for so many. Can you come over to the Iowa thread and share with us, then we all can decide if we want a Midwest thread? |

| I'll help finish up this thread. 54 for z5 today, cumulative total, 308. If you wonder why so many, they are all 16-oz plastic cups with clear lids in daisy trays. It takes just under an hour to fill, plant, cover for some, mist, snap on lids, punch each lid with xacto knife 4X, label one daisy tray that holds 18 cups & if different seeds in one tray stick in a popsicle stick w/label on index card strip & taped around, stick down in cup and put how many. It saves time for now but plan to get a paint pen and label each cup or use a plant marker in every single cup. Then I went outside and beat down the snow with a window box enough times to hold 3 trays level, then I have to make the cups as straight as possible as they get out of whack while carrying. Today I had to stop to burn more holes (3 each) outside in 100 plastic cups and two extra containers. It was cold, and my fingers got cold but I wanted to get it done, otherwise not so bad out there. I quit doing the slits in the lids with the hot knife tip, gotta get some gunk off it. |
