| This is the third thread in the official Winter Sowing Container Count (affectionately known as Zone Wars). The count runs from December 21, 2012 - May 1, 2013. Everyone is welcome to participate! To participate you simply post on this thread the number of containers you have wintersown. You can post daily, weekly, etc. Each time you post, please include your total count so far. For example: How To Count Containers: How to List your Zone: If your member page does not list a zone, you must include the zone in your post. For example: If your member pages lists you on the border of 2 zones (such as 7b/8a) you need to decide which team to join for Zone Wars, and include it in your post. Or you can revise your member page and put 7b from now until May 1. Then after May 1 change it back to 7b/8a. To see the latest count, click on the Container Count / Zone Wars Spreadsheet. To see previous Container Count threads, click on this list of Zone Wars Threads prepared by River_crossroads. Everyone who is winter sowing is encouraged to participate. Chatting, support, suggestions, and friendly rivalry are encouraged. Every container counts so join the fun!! ~ Happy Sowing ~ |

| another 5 trays today - making a total of 104 - zone 8( counted some of the trays as 2 or 3 since they are full size and have several varieties of seeds in them. This was the best total I could come up with since there are many modules and everything is a vastly different size and shape. Haven't started on veggies yet (mostly direct sown but leeks, tomatoes, curcubits and peppers will be in pots, at least till May. Wondering why zone 8 is lagging? |

Zone Wars Summary: Zone 3 . . . . . . . . . . . 0 Total Containers: 4,821 Good morning, winter sowers. Welcome to the count Manana20, Proudgm, and JenH20! Campanula, zone 8 never has astounding numbers in the count, this zone doesn't generally get much of winter. The count usually comes down to a race between 5 and 6, which covers a large part of the wintry US. Sure is wintry here still, we have about a foot of snow on the ground with another storm coming in today, although they've downgraded it to 2-4 inches. Zone Wars Summary: Zone 3 . . . . . . . . . . . 0 Total Containers: 6,053 Happy Saturday, winter sowing peeps! Welcome to the count Sandysoil and Carrotstix! It's certainly not too late. Zones 5 and 6 are still pretty wintry. We just had another winter storm which dumped over a foot of snow, and my containers are buried again. But it's supposed to be in the 50s this weekend so it probably won't last long. Click the Container Count / Zone Wars Spreadsheet to see the container count in detail. | 11 more for me in zone 5, for a total of 35. I've still not found my cache of perennial seeds that I'd set aside specially to sow this year. Oh, we'll. I guess I'll focus on annuals and hope they show up for next year. Of course I still have far more seeds and containers than I have time to sow and plant out, but the garden will be beautiful and fun. Martha |

Zone Wars Summary: Zone 3 . . . . . . . . . . . 0 Total Containers: 6,330 Good afternoon, winter sowers. Ever so steadily, zone 6 is creeping up on zone 5!! Welcome new counters Bebe_ct, Jmhill926_organic, and Jbowhay! Jmhill, it is very exciting to see how many seeds sprout. Not 100%, but I usually get between 80-90% of containers sprouting. Some seeds are nearly foolproof to sow, others are fussy and perplexing. Either way, the fate of a winter-sower often becomes too many seedlings and having to "plunk n run", "hunk o seedlings" and - perish the thought - cull extra seedlings! | Sowed 7 more yesterday for zone 7 for a total of 76. Just a few more to go for me. I'm still on the fence about a couple of plants but will probably go for it just so I don't get to May and wish I'd sown some. |

| I guess I'll join in with the count, though I can't help out my former zone 6ers now that I am back in zone 5 again. So... Add 5 to zone 5. Yeah, I have a whopping total of 5. lol! I got a late start but I'll be slowly adding to this total. But not too many. I have enough mature plants to worry about transplanting from one state to another to have to add caring for too many babies on top of them. We'll see what happens next year. This year will be mostly plants for the butterflies and their cats. Karen |

"There are many tired gardeners but I've seldom met old gardeners. I know many elderly gardeners but the majority are young at heart. Gardening simply does not allow one to be mentally old, because too many hopes and dreams are yet to be realized. The one absolute of gardeners is faith. Regardless of how bad past gardens have been, every gardener believes that next year's will be better. It is easy to age when there is nothing to believe in, nothing to hope for; gardeners, however, simply refuse to grow up. Thomas Jefferson once said 'Though an old man, I am but a young gardener'."...Allan Armitage "A society grows great when old people plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in"...Author unknown |
