WS'ing~ Grandpa & Uncle approved! LOL

| Hi all, I just wanted to share a little story. :) Its not like we're busy in the garden or anything... lol
So, because of my recent interest in ws'ing, I asked my sister's and mother's households to start saving soda bottles for me. My grandfather lives with my mom now (btw, he's the reason my heart longs for a garden~ the best summers of my life were spent with him in his garden), so when he asked why they were saving the soda bottles, Mom explained the concept. He talked to my uncle about it (who is a pro at everything he tries, including gardening!) and he said "Oh yeah, people have been doing that for ages!" So when Grampa came up yesterday, I brought him over to the glass doors and showed him my snow-covered soda bottles. I love that he was interested in them and can't wait for spring to get here. I just know Grampa will come up regularly to tinker in the garden with me. :)
So what about you all? I'm sure there are plenty of family memories of gardening with parents or grandparents. Wanna share? (I'm feeling just a little nostalgic today!)

When I showed my Dad all the WSing containers 2 years ago for the first time, and briefly explained the concept, he "got it" right away. He said "that makes so much sense". He personally is not a gardener, but his father gardened and grandparents and other older relatives had farms. I imagine nearly all of us come from a long ancestry of farmers - else we wouldn't be here, because they wouldn't have had much to eat otherwise.

When I think of my grandmother I think of her Lily of the Valley. Tried to grow it in my garden when I first moved here 16 years ago, but it didn't take. Found out later it's a shade lover and my garden's full sun. I should probably try it on the hill on the side that's in shade most of the day.

Such a nice story! I also remember gardening with my grandparents. My grandfather had huge gardens and my other grandparents did too. My Dad even grew up on a farm. So I guess I come from farmers too. caryltoo, if you want Lilly of the valley I can possibly get some seeds. I have 2 small plants. I keep debating if I will rip them out or not. I saw some seed pods last summer. Or I can just send you some stems :) Karen

I come from a long line of gardeners too! My dad taught me to compost 'in place' and my grandma preferred being outside with her plants. The winter sowing technique popped out at me and I knew it would work! I tell you, it's in the genes every time.

My grandma and I call ourselves the "Barefoot Gardeners" a play on the "Square foot Gardeners".... I remember her tiger lilies outside the front door and her tomatoes, peppers, and dill... She is everything to me - maybe that is why gardening has become such an obsession for me.... lol

I never gardened with anyone, but I really hope that my two boys who also love to garden will grow up to say "My mom and I used to grow....and I loved it when we planted..." and have good memories of the time we share gardening.

karen, thanks for the offer, but I was thinking about the side hill and that's my husband's jungle of hostas and mat juniper and weeds. I don't want to get involved with tending anything in that mess. (Not that my own perennial garden isn't a jungle as well). But thanks.
