I wintersow them in early March with good results. I'm in Zone 8b.

Mine self sow so they should be quite happy being sown in Autumn from fresh seed and waiting over winter until their time comes. The seeds often drop green, so they don't even need to be brown and dry to germinate successfully. BTW I would class March as Spring sowing.

Big seeds like nasties can rot in cold, wet weather. Been there, done that. I don't sow them until around March, either.
And if I wait until spring, around April, they sprout fast.

I rarely get nasturtium volunteers, though I've grown them for years.

I'm just curious, Flora, how your weather compares to mine. Our average yearly rainfall is around 41", though last year we had over 70". What's your average rainfall?

Thanks, Barbe, Karen and Flora for the information. I guess March it is. Karen your nasturtiums are gorgeous. Even my store bought ones never looked so good.

    I direct-sow mine in April.
My understanding is that the seedlings don't transplant too well.

Thanks, kvenkat. I'll probably sow some in the ground as well.Never had too much luck this way but I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket.
