slugs or snails possibly? I've had them come thru the bottom holes before.

I didn't see any slugs or snails when I opened the lid. Don't those eat the roots? (I'm new to this, so if I'm wrong I appreciate the correct answer) The roots look nice and long already, but the green leafy parts are getting chewed up. Slugs and snails feed at night so you wouldn't see them by looking during the day. Lift up the containers and check the bottoms. You may find the culprit(s) under there. Or check after dark with a torch. And no, they don't only eat roots. Most eat the tenderest top growth they can find including flowers.

Wow, thanks for the information. I suppose I'll re-sow and keep the containers off the ground. I want to eat that broc... not feed the slugs, ugh.

I've found the perps, and you were right. Slugs! Ewww! So, how do I keep the slimy creatures out of my containers? I may put them in a box with a bead of salt around the inside perimeter?

re slugs - there are many low-cost home-made remedies such as beer, which work.
but in case you don't drink - I used escar-go from "gardens alive" - had to spend money. :)
but it worked like magic, 2 applications and they were gone and have not returned.
it is safe for children pets and the environment.
plus it's a very nice (if somewhat expensive) website.
