Nope. Nice try though. I wonder if my helen's are coming back this year. The plant I'm talking about is about 3 foot tall and thick stemmed - crazy yellow bloom.

That's a tough one, I can think of lots where you might have said looks like a daisy, or dahlia. What I usually do is just quit thinking about it, and then it will come to me. Maybe not that day, but it does come :) centaurea macrocephala, trollius, ranunculus, cephalaria, inula. ???

Thick stem & crazy yellow bloom makes me think canna lily but they're not butterfly magnets that I'm aware of. Oh wait, what are those really tall--5-6 ft.--plants with fuzzy leaves? Verbascum?

It's kind of like liatris in stature, but I think it's realated to cornflowers. My former secretary grew it and I managed to get one plant from seed. I don't know if it's coming back, so I want a backup. It's drought tolerant. I think I got the seeds from the exchange.

I was thinking centaurea macrocephala (aka giant knaphead) also. Google has some good images of it. Maybe the images would help.
