Has anyone tried or had success with winter sowing hollyhock?

Thanks

Absolutely - this is one of the easy ones to winter sow (at least in my zone). Know that some of the older varieties are bienniel (flower in second year).

Oh yes! Did them my first year, and Hollyhocks are not flowers that do well where I live.

I am in New Mexico - zone 7b - and have done great with winter sowing hollyhocks. This year I have wintersowed 24 black ones and 24 assorted colors and they are already up. My plants seem to have survived for more than 2 yrs - they never seem to die entirely. There is a rosette of green all winter. They even do well on the limited water and intense sun that they get in my desert climate.

They are easy to grow Hollyhocks, Poppies, and Lupines are usually the first to pop up.

Winter sowing is how I started all my Hollyhock patches. They were my granddaughers (just turned 6) first jugs to winter sow with me; 4 winters ago. She does 4-6 jugs each winter since. We have some nice Hollyhock patchs now, and some of the plants measured over 8 foot tall at the lake. They will self seed too.
