I have one jug of simpson lettuce that is sprouting. How and when is the best time to plant it out? HOS?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but lettuce I don't believe would be a good hos candidate. I myself have planted hos and things take twice as long to grow, so I try to not do that unless there is no other option, like petunias or impatients.

Lettuce is something that will produce from the center so it will need spacing. I would suggest getting a few sets of true leaves then transplanting and space about 1.5 at the least apart from each other.

This is just me though others may have tried it hos style and had no problems.

countrycarolyn - is this advice for head lettuce or leaf lettuce or both? My lettuce is just leaf lettuce.

I've never had any problem with HOS and leaf lettuce, spaced 4-6 inches apart. My local nursery sells them in hunks also. In zone 6 I plant out in mid March.

Head is what I was thinking about. Though doesn't leaf also produce from the center??

See some do not have a problem with the hunk of seedling planting. Though my results were very poor when I planted like that. It seriously took at least twice as long to grow when planted in my soil.

For cut and come again you can plant out in clumps but I usually separate the plants and plant out about 4 inches apart. Later I thin to around 8 inches using the thinnings for salads. As the plants grow I thin again if necessary. My object is to ensure no soil is ever showing between the lettuces. I sow in succession so there are more babies to put in any spaces. Starting out with 1.5 feet between plants means there is a lot of ground unused to start with. If space is at a premium that's a lost opportunity.
