I'm trying for the first time this year. Trying to do my planting of seeds about 10 days before a full moon.

What a coincidence!
I just found this calendar a few days ago and was contemplating giving it a try.
The oldtimers swear by it and I can tell what faze the moon is at when the field across the road gets planted.

Gee I didn't know the calendar was free online!
I always get the Almanac and transfer to my sowing calendar.
I do notice a difference when direct sowing or transplanting.

IÂm always up for trying something different but I want to make sure I understand. This is what FarmerÂs Almanac says: The best time to plant flowers and vegetables that bear crops above ground is during the light of the Moon; that is, from the day the Moon is new to the day it is full.

According to the chart for my area favorable planting dates are 5/7 - 5/19, however the moon is new on May 8th and full on the 23rd. Does anyone understand why the favorable planting date ends several days prior to the scheduled full moon?

I don't think it would have much affect on a seed, but a seedling it would. So, it would give a seed time to germinate? And the water table would also be rising at that time.
But, take it with a grain of salt. Like I said, just a guess...

btw my example was for planting beans which I should have mentioned.

This website gives a calendar for each day of the month of what gardening is best to do on each day. I always print it out every 2 months and it really works for regular gardening. I've thought of trying it for W/S but I've not had time to W/S on the days it recommends.

I wondered that too, years ago and tracked the brightness of the moon. I am assuming they say to plant right before the new moon is because the pull of the water table, then the brightness. I know for planting later during the cycle for above ground crops you want to get as much light during the 24 hour day as possible. Very close and at the full moon doesn't give the seeds the brightest light possible during the cycle.
