Has anyone have any trouble with mice and other rodents getting into their WS containers and eating the seeds?

Thanks,
Matthew

Not that I've noticed. I did find a slug in a container last spring but I flicked it out with the tip of a shovel & killed it.

I haven't but we also have a family of wild cats that run around here that no one can catch. We have a lot of squirrels but they can't get in my containers.

How about some steel wool in the opening, open enough to let in ventilation but closed off enough to prevent the mouse. Though from what I gather a mouse can get through an opening as small as my thumb in thickness not as long.

Definitely slugs here too. Never caught a mousie in the act, but there's tons of them around.

Slugs I've had, and squirrels digging for nut seeds, and birds looking for seeds or seedlings, but not mice or other critters bothering the flats. I have two indoor-outdoor cats, and a feral cat living in the garage that I would like to get inside. The only mice I find are dead, often in parts, killed by any of the cats, and left for Mommy to find--usually by stepping on them. Ick. If you have mice you need a cat or a good little terrier to take care of the problem.

I personally don't have a mouse problem; I was just wondering about it. I am getting ready to attempt my first WS and know I have mice in the garden, I can see their trails after the snow melted.

Thanks for the info,
Matthew

I never really even thought about it. We have all sorts of animals around here, you would think our deck would be safe, it's about 12 feet off the ground, but the chipmunks get up there all the time. They must do a tightrope walk up my rope lights. We also had a groundhog on the deck once. He came over to the sliding glass door and just stared in. Like the neighborhood cats and squirrels do. It was so weird. Drove the dog nuts.
I guess if you have the problem, you could stick kabob sticks into the jug openings. Might find some skewered mice though, gross. I will be doing that around my lily bulbs this year. Stupid squirrels kept chewing them off at the ground and just leaving them there, not even eating them. I came home from work one morning and caught one in the act. I tried to run him down in my jeep I was so mad! Those tree rats are the worst offenders in my garden.

This fall I planted many bulbs, only to find the squirrels all of a sudden hanging around , playing, as I call it, near my beds. So I went online and found that spices, particularly cinammon, and hot pepper sprinkled around will help. Has to be reapplied after a rain.

I hope the chipmunks too don't get into my containers. Those little buggers are so cute, but so destructive. After the first snow, I noticed foot prints on the back porch that didn't look like mice or chipmunks, so my next concern will be raccoons or possum. Just can't win.

A well aimed bb gun will help too. :) Haven't seen raccoons, we have possums nearby but not in the immediate area. We had a skunk hanging around all last year. Spraying every friggin night. My mom and I were trimming back an overgrown container in the backyard at midday in July, and it came running out from our forsythia hedge (not towards us, but we were about 15 feet away). Needless to say...we went screaming in the other direction. Thank God the dog wasn't outside with us!

Something is in my garage, ate two whole boxes of quince leftover from the fall. Took it or them two days to do it. Yikes!
