I have not had this problem as only add enough water to moisten the mix. In a big plastic tub filled half full of mix, add water, then stir with a garden fork adding more water as needed.

I mix mine up in a wide 5 gallon bucket, and use an old electric mixer to mix it with water until it looks like cake batter.

Then slop into containers with a slotted spoon like a crazed cafeteria worker.

I always add more water than needed so that self levels in the containers. I have a good draining system set up where I work so a little excess water isn't a problem.

Do most people wet the mix before filling containers? I always just overfill the containers a bit and tamp it down gently. Then I either set it in a few inches of water to wick from below if I have time to wait, or water from above with the spray from the sink or a watering can. If I water from above, I rotate watering several containers at once which gives it time to soak in before I add more water. I think most potting mixes add a wetting agent so it will wet easily, unlike straight peat moss. I've used Promix, MetroMix, Miracle Grow, and Schultz which worked well this way for me. Is there an advantage to wetting it before you fill the containers?

I put my mix in a five gallon bucket and give it a good soaking.. The only advantage I see with this way is time,it takes too long for the water to wick up from the bottom. I am impatient!

I did a flat yesterday of all petunias and let it wick up from the bottom. I think it took about 1/2 an hour, would have been two minutes if it was in a bucket!

I love promix. It does seem to absorb water better to me.

It seems to go further than others I have used too.

Here Menards sells it too...pretty cheap too.
