I would wait until mid april..

They just want warm heat and light. Easy germintors but do not like the cold.

Do you have Annual or Perennial Salvia? I sowed my perennial salvia. But I am waiting till spring to do the annual ones.
Or is their something about Salvia that I am missing?

 o
RE: Ok, Today i sow Salvia***or do I ?

If it is annual, I agree with Silver. I sowed my Salvia last year at this time and they all came up in a couple of weeks and I had to baby them till May, when I planted them.

Salvia will get zapped by frost. So I am going to do my annual Salvia in April this year.

BUT - I am not certain about Blue Perenniel Salvia. Last year it also came up in a couple of weeks (or less) and I'm wondering if it will be ok over the winter months.

any one know?

I have some blue salvia (azurea?) That I believe is hardy to zone 4, so I think its possible that those can be sown now.

Any of the red ones tho, definitely wait.

Now what,,
I received the saliva in trades, the envie just says,Saliva.
I did have one pack marked as Perennial, so i sowed that one.
What if they are all perennials, and i wait closed to spring, will they be ok.

I am closing in on my 100th container, and feelin so good.
We are getting more snow as we speak, calling for another storm,i am so sick of snow.

I will be doing close to 150,or more, annuals. In a few months ,I love WSing!!!

All of my salvia comes back every year and oh my goodness.....reseeds like the dickens! They are everywhere! Oh, and I have the annual kind. It snows on them, it freezes them and mine just keep on growing! I kinda want to pull some of them, but they work so hard on growing through our conditions I don't have the heart.

I think it totally depends on your location. Like I said, here I have already sown my salvia and don't worry one bit about it, but others in the same zone might.

Good luck with yours!

RE: Ok, Today i sow Salvia***or do I ?

Carol-
If you sow your unknown Salvia close to Spring, and it turns out to be perennial, it should be fine.

I love that coral nymph too. I had it one year, but it didn't re-seed. I have some seeds this year.

Last year I WS'ed a bunch of red salvia, PLUS they re-seeded like crazy, plus I had some of Yvonne's Salvia, plus white and blue.

However, I decided I don't want the red, because the foliage turns brown very early on, and looks ugly.
Instead I'm going to plant the blue, cuz the foliage stays green right thru the winter. It's green now.

So I have a lot of work to turn over the soil and hope to keep the red from re-seeding.

RE: Ok, Today i sow Salvia***or do I ?

Each area is different, I have a hard time getting anything to reseed, becuase my first frosts come much earlier than alot of others... I barely got any of the yvonnes salvia this last year before first frosts, and none of my ANNUAL salvia has reseeded for me ever.

Ive never had much luck doing salvia in cold, so I sow them later, with my tomatoes in late april. IF I do them much earlier they just do not seem to germinate for me well.

But each area of the country IS really different, what doesnt work for me, might work for someone else.

RE: Ok, Today i sow Salvia***or do I ?

It really does depend on which salvia you have. Most of the blue and purple ones are perennial, because most of them come from Eastern Europe. Most of the red ones are more tropical, so it isn't that they are annuals, it's just that they can't tolerate freezing temperatures. There are exceptions, though, as salvia greggii comes in red and fuschia, and it is hardy, as is hot lips, which is red and white. And salvia guaranitica, which includes Black & Blue, can tolerate freezing but isn't hardy in colder zones.

That said, my salvia coccinea does re-seed, as does salvia subrotunda. But if they sprout too early, the frost will kill them. Wintersowing provides a warmer environment, which might encourage them to sprout earlier than seeds that fall on the ground.

To be safe, I would say do them with your annuals, or else plant some seeds now, and if the containers don't have any sprouts, add some seeds when it is a bit warmer. It is hard when you don't know the variety.

I'm not sure ALL salvia has to be surface-sown but mine were and my first couple failures were because I assumed they needed to be covered up.

cAROL,

A quote from one of your previous posts:

Now what,,
I received the saliva in trades, the envie just says,Saliva.

Do you understand the spitting comment now?

 o
RE: Ok, Today i sow Salvia***or do I ?

"You say saliva...I say salvia",

Just a certain placement of the "v". Made me chuckle. Gettin' close and personal with those seeds.

Funny thing is..the word "spelen" in Dutch, means "play" in English. We're all just a playin' and 'spelen' with those seeds!
I'm off to Mexico soon! Never been! Apparently I can buy commercial seedpacks and bring them back! There's a Walmart and Costco there (in Cancun)! Funn!! Wowww! Forget the beach! I want seeds!
