RE: Shurbs

Lots of people do wintersow shrubs. Most that I've read about are fruiting/flowering bushes for wildlife or human consumption. I wintersow Virginia Creeper, which is a woody vine that doubles as a ground cover and climbs fences/trees/walls and has beautiful fall color. It also has berries that are eaten by birds and the leaves are food for many moths and other insects. Sorry I can't tell you more. Hopefully some others will pipe in.

Rose of Sharon, Vitex, Butterfly Bush, some pines, roses, beauty berry, crape myrtles, elderberry, dogwood, maples, willow and several more shrubs and trees but off the top of my head I can't remember them all--and it has been many of them.

It's important to choose those which will thrive in your region. Some may require gathering fresh seeds and sowing in early to late autumn--best to do, I think, in a large patio container which will hold several gallons of soil, this way all that soil will retain a lot of moisture and won't dry out too frequently (self-watering containers are best). Once you have the seeds sown you might want to places some chicken wire or some such over the top to keep squirrels out. Place the container in a shady spot and let t sit until early spring. Of course do check on it occasionally for moisture. Some shrub and tree seeds can got for a couple of years before sprouting, so designate the container for that purpose. Transplant seedlings from it each year and resow it in the fall or early winter with more shrub and tree seed.
