Newbie ? Regarding 16 oz. containers

Please bear with me... This is my first year winter sowing and I'm planning for the wave of green!

I have seen posts by many folks who use the 16 oz. drinking cups to winter sow. I have run out of large containers and would like to try using the cups but have some questions. How many seeds do you sow in each cup? When ready to put the seedlings in their permanent location do you plant the entire contents of the cup as a HOS or do you separate and plant each seedling separately?

Thank you

With me it depends on the size of the seed and the size of the final plant. Dahlia seeds are pretty big and the plant gets pretty big before it flowers, so I space out five of them and then once they sprout I pull them apart and pot them up before I plant them out in their final spot. Same with hardy geranium seeds. But things with tiny seeds, like California poppies, I take a good generous pinch and sprinkle them all over the surface of the soil in the cup, and then plant it out HOS.

Basically, you grab a small hunk of soil with seedlings in it and plant this hunk out instead of separating all of your seedlings individually.

Trudi recommends this method because its the easiest way to plant everything out when you have a zillion containers with seedlings sprouting everywhere. Ma Nature takes care of the thinning process.
