I live in central Illinois. I would like to WS some 'Italian White' sunflower seeds...so they can be planted by early May, when should I start this process....
Thanks. |

I'm in 6b. Although I have a lot that start from the birdfeeder, any that I really want to survive, I start in mid April. I also protect them with net dollar store waste baskets once the seedlings are planted out because the bunnies like to eat 'em, and the squirrels like to dig them up and eat the germinating seed. It's a hard knock life out there for sunnies! target="_blank"> This was an eleven foot beauty. |

I sowed mine around last frost. Keep the covers on as long as they fit over the sprout though so the birds and squirrels don't get your babies. You will certainly be able to plant out by april.

| "Italian White" is on my sowing-list as well. Don´t you just love it´s latin name: Helianthus debilis? :) |

| I had some tall ones last year and just threw the seeds out. I saved seed and plan on WS some but didn't realize I should wait until so late. Really pretty sunnies gals. |
