Did I mess it up?

I sowed my first 4 containers last night. But I noticed as I took them out that the soil wasn't wet all the way through. I used milk jugs and wet them with the shower sprayer. I guess I didn't get it wet enough.

They are outside now and the temp is below zero. We didn't get the huge storm but there is still plenty of time for snow/rain yet.

Should I go water them? Or just leave them to Mother Nature?

Hmm... Well I am WS n00b also, but here is what I understand in regards to your question:

One of the reasons to water the containers thoroughly first is to make sure you have good drainage. So what I did was make my holes in the bottoms and tops, add soil, water the heck out of it, and watch it drain out. When I was sure that the containers would drain well, I added my seed and closed em up.

So it seems to me that it would be a good idea to water your containers again and watch em drain so that you can be sure they won't be soggy when Ma Nature does her thing.

Hope this helps for now. Maybe a veteran will chime in soon to add some more words of wisdom!

Steff :)

I think you will be OK, wet stuff has been coming from the sky at regular intervals it seems, everywhere. Check them after the next rain/snow and see if they haven't gotten moist.

I have always mix up my pro-mix with water in a big tub and THEN filled containers with the moist mixture. Seems easier, cause I don't like to think about the sprayer disturbing the seeds (which probably get all tossed about in the freeze/thaw outside anyway..)

If you feel you do have to water, you could just rotate jugs in and out of a shallow basin with a couple of inches of water and let them moisten from the bottom through the holes.

No worries.....
