Hi,

I've just received my seeds and am ready for my first stab at winter sowing. I live in Syracuse,New York zone 5a. Will I have success with WS any/all of these or are there some that should only be started indoors under grow lights?

Snapdragons: Twinny, Sonnet and Ribbon series
Carnation: L'enfant de Nice
Nemesia: Baby Blue Eyes
Poppy: Calfornia Rose
Peony Poppy
Salvia Patens: Cambridge Blue
Salvia: Texas Sage Brenhurst
Baby's Breath
Jupiter's Beard/Centranthus
Impatiens Balsamina

Thanks so much!

Patreesh

Hi patreesh and welcome to winter sowing! I can't answer for most of the things on your list because I haven't grown them and most of what I WS last year was perennial but I did winter sow peony poppy. It sprouted very well and bloomed first year from seed. According to the sprout chart I kept, I WS seeds January 9, they sprouted March 14 with 90% germination and bloomed June 10. Hope that helps.

I'm not familiar with everything on your list either. Snapdragons, poppies, baby's breath, hardy salvias I know will be fine to sow now. You may want to wait a while to sow the impatiens though. But I still would not use grow lights....just too much work to suit me.

I've wintersowed snapdragons, poppies, and carnations. Balsam I usually just direct sow.
