My WS list...any feedback?

Posted by connietn 7 MidTN (My Page) on

I just finished making a list of everything I've WS'd. I did several containers of some of the things I'd like a lot of.

If anyone has tried WSing any of these before, I would appreciate your feedback! Did it bloom the first year? Second year? Good germination? Bad germination? Was it easy to get to blooming size? Difficult?

I still only have sprouts of Rudbeckia Irish Eyes.

My notes from those I sowed last year.

Blackberry Lily - spouted, transplanted well. Has not bloomed. Still small.
Buddleia - almost all of my ws butterfly bushes bloomed.
Coreopsis Early Sunrise - got two plants from oodles of seed I collected. I blame the seed. Did not bloom.
Eryngium - Germinated very well. Grew only a little. One plant bloomed.
Gaillardia - one bloom from a couple of plants. Weedy looking.
Rudebeckia Green Wizard - Nice large clump of basal growth, no blooms.
Monarda Violet Queen - Bloomed a little the first year. Did not like the shade I gave it. Has spread to about 2' across.
Passion Vine - Two of six seeds germinated. Died before blooming. We had a lot of rain. Planted in a container.
Scabiosa - almost all of them bloomed the first year.

I'm in 7b, my perennial bed is mostly shaded until around 1pm, then after 6pm in summer.

Thanks token - great notes! Very helpful. I'm glad to hear about the buddleias, as I really wanted to see color on those this year.

Make sure you plant them in good soil and full sun. Keep them watered in July and August. I had some real beauties. I've sown more seed this year and plan to do a whole area in the gully with them soon. If they all germinate, I'll become the butterfly bush capital of NC.

I am very excited about the buddleias! Did yours come true from seed, or were there a lot of surprises? I'm glad to hear I might see some bloom, because I wasn't sure if they would come true and wanted to save them until I can see what I've got.

I have two Black Knight bushes, a White Profusion, and some cuttings that I started of Honeycomb. I want to line our fence with them in one area. :)

RE: My WS list...any feedback?

My purple seeds gave me all kinds of colors ranging from bluish to bright pink. My white profusion gave me only white ones, but another trader said she got only purple ones from those seed. Black knight will not come true. I got no dark purples at all. Honeycomb is sterile, so cuttings are the only way to propagate it. I have two of those under lights, if they will just survive the spider mite infestation I seem to have at the moment. My brugs are looking kind of sad too.

Oh, you have to have Black Knight token. I absolutely LOVE it. The color is fantastic, so rich. And it is so fragrant! I could send you a cutting. :)

Your list looks great. The only thing I wanted to mention was that I have had mixed germination on gaillardia, about half most of the time. I have also heard that oranges and lemons doesn't come true from seed but you might get a nice variation.
I had good success with ech.s last year and am hoping for blooms this year. Also dianthus is wonderful as it sprouts quite early.

Thanks flood! I heard that about oranges & lemons also, right after I had sowed them. Oh well! But maybe as you said something interesting will come of it. Good news about the dianthus! Maybe I will try to get that one sowed next.
