| This is the third thread in the official Winter Sowing Container Count (affectionately known as Zone Wars).
The count runs from December 22, 2011 - May 1, 2012. Everyone is welcome to participate! To participate you simply post on this thread the number of containers you have wintersown. You can post daily, weekly, etc. Each time you post, please include your total count so far. For example:
How To Count Containers:
How to List your Zone:
If your member page does not list a zone, you must include the zone in your post. For example: If your member pages lists you on the border of 2 zones (such as 7b/8a) you need to decide which team to join for Zone Wars, and include it in your post. Or you can revise your member page and put 7b from now until May 1. Then after May 1 change it back to 7b/8a. To see previous Container Count threads, click on this list of Zone Wars threads.
Everyone who is winter sowing is encouraged to participate.
Chatting, support, suggestions, and friendly rivalry are encouraged.
Every container counts so join the fun!! ~Happy Sowing~ |

| I finally got started WS. Please add 48 for zone 6 for a total of 48 FYI: I am also trying something new this year,I save used family sized tea bags and just snip the top off. They are about the size of the little peat pellet pots. I tried this before, everything sprouted fine, but it seems like I let them dry out to much. This was just an expsirment(SP)indoors, in winter. I am trying it for real this year. I will try to update on this As spring gets closer. PS also tried coffee grounds, it did not seem to work, nothing sprouted as best I recall |

Zone Wars Summary: Zone 4 . . . . . . . . . 295 Total Containers: 5,689 Good morning, winter sowers. Hope everyone had a nice weekend. Welcome to zone 6, Gwen49! Zone 6 currently has a solid lead. Lol Beatrice, you are a "sowing machine"! I haven't heard that one, but it's got to have been used on this forum sometime before...? Bookjunky, please adjust your total - your 1/2 gallon milk jugs count as 1 container each, not .5 container. I use 2 LTRs, 1 LTRs, 16 oz cups, and salad boxes, amongst others, and although they are very different sizes, count as 1 container each. Click the Container Count / Zone Wars Spreadsheet to see the container count in detail. I swear since I'm not doing the stand at the farmers market this summer, I'm not going to break 3 figures this year.

Zone Wars Summary: Zone 4 . . . . . . . . . 319 Total Containers: 5,830 Good morning, winter sowers. Welcome to the count, Sweetlady and Kimka! Bookjunky, don't feel like you're cheating, it is okay to count even a 6 oz container as a separate container. Think of it this way - the container may be small, and you're using less potting mix, but you're still going to same trouble to organize and sow seeds, make a label, monitor the sprouts, then plant out. The smallest containers I use are a few 8 oz cups, for the basil and parsley. Click the Container Count / Zone Wars Spreadsheet to see the container count in detail.

And my little guy, who had picked me a flower last summer was tickled to discover that while it had been still sitting in the kitchen window, it was loaded with seeds. He promptly gathered them up in a paper towel and put them on my work table. LOL, I can take a hint. They were sowed today. |
