new here- warm/cold

I'm in No CA zone 8ish, just No of SF.
I've misplaced my heat mat and decided to attempt winter sowing with my spec ed class.
The problem is, the weather is quite whacky this winter! We've had more frozen mornings than I can remember, then wonderfully warm afternoons! We're looking at 70's later this week!
Last date of frost is supposed to be April 15th (and I see the chiropractor on April 20th! LOL)
Am I OK starting most of the veges this week covered in plastic?
This sure sounds easier than the lights, heat mat etc!
Thanks for any info! Nancy

I wish I could answer you, but our climates are totally different. Hopefully someone who knows more about yours will show up soon.

I can say, this is much easier than heat mats and lights.

Even though we are on different coasts, I will give you my 2 cents worth:) If the veggies you are starting are tomatoes, peppers, and herbs then yes, your timing is spot on. Be sure to take the plastic off when your little plants begin to emerge. Watch out for damping off. Do you have enough natural light for them since it sounds like you won't be using grow lights?
