Give your perennials lots of space and fill in with annuals.

Ditto what Michelle said. You still have lots of time to sow annuals.

If you have large spaces to fill, consider some spreading annuals like petunia or verbena. Zinnias or marigolds are good all-season flowers, too. If it's a shady spot- you could buy a few coleus or impatiens.

I never dislike the look of young perennials..the green for me is a sign of promise.

Before and after pictures, or progression from year to year, are more striking if you leave some space between the baby perennials so you can see how they grow from year to year. However, the more space you leave, the more weeding you may have to do. Unless you mulch heavily. Lots of ways to look at why and how to fill a garden. I have a similar situation. I'm starting out new with a blank bed. My plan is to leave space between the perennials, but fill them with new annuals I've never grown. Maybe I'll discover a new favorite. I also need to find out what grows well in my new soil and sun conditions. It's all a wonderful experiment/adventure.
