I have had a fabulous first year of wintersowing and I'm thrilled with the number of seedlings I have! I'm worried about a couple of containers though. The lower leaves of my little alyssum seedlings are turning yellow, and my guara have a few brown spots on the leaves. Could this be a sign of too much moisture? Too much sun? When I noticed it I went ahead and opened them up to the sun and breezes a few days ago when it got so warm, thinking to dry the moisture out a bit, but now it's cold again and I flipped the lids down for the night. Please advise, I don't want to lose any of my babies!

When you say the lower leaves on your baby alyssums are turning yellow, do you mean their very first set of leaves? If so, you have nothing to worry about. Those leaves are the 'seed leaves', or cotyledons, and are supposed to turn yellow and fall off once the true leaves form.

Yellow indicates to much water. I have never noticed my cotyledon leaves turning yellow before they drop off. Usually they just kinda shrivel up and drop off. My cotyledons usually start to drop off about 2nd to 3rd set of true leaves. Brown spots on leaves could indicate several things. If you used a fertilizer maybe you got some on the leaves and it burnt the leaves. It could be a pest of some sort. Gaura I do not think would turn brown on the leaves from to much sun. Picture by any chance??

I'm worried that I may have overwatered. They are in sun (always have been), but now I've opened the tops and put a window screen over them to shade them a bit. |

Sorry, here are pics -- did I overwater? The lower alyssum leaves are yellowy-brown, and the guara has brown spots. Gaura: http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n39/lceh/P3250007.jpg Alyssum:

Yeah it looks like to much water at one point in time. Do not stress the yellow leaves will fall off but just try not to over water anymore. If you notice things going limp then you got a problem. Just let them dry out for a little while and keep an eye on them. Maybe even put them in a little more sun. If the container is extremely light and then your seedlings go limp add some water, but I would try to not water for at least 3 days and put them in some sun. I know that was probably confusing 2 different signs of limp could mean 2 different things. As for the gaura it looks like to much confined heat. Put you some more ventilation holes in your container. Don't worry about those few spots.
