| I planned to start some soon, but read in another current thread that it might be too late for them this year. Is it too late? Its no big deal if they won't flower this year, just as long as i could get recognizable plants that won't get mistaken for weeds...
and if i plant them in peat pellets or Dixie cups, will the seedlings sulk when they are transplanted out? (will i need to sow in something bigger?) I have never had a poppy *not* play dead for the rest of the year after transplanting. then the slugs get them... after 5 years and numerous tries, in different locations, with nursery poppies, i have only one poppy that returns every year. it showed up out of the blue two years ago after being planted 4 years ago.
i want lots of giant fluttery poppies some day. |

| Orientals germinate later than annual poppies - sowing now would be fine. And don't be surprised when they go dormant and vanish in the summer heat. Just keep them well marked in the garden, keep some moisture in the soil but don't make it soggy, and enjoy them when they start putting out a ton of growth in March 2011. Lynda |

| Wonderful, thanks! I'll plant some this week :) |

| lgslgs, Is it true that oriental poppies that are started from seed do not bloom the first year? I've read in some forums they take 2 seasons to flower and others say they flower in the first season. Just curious if the bare roots and seeds I planted last fall will develop into anything this spring. |
|
| They tend to flower in the first spring after their first growing year. So that's a full year for oriental poppies sown in the Spring, but only about 6 - 8 months for those sown in late summer/early fall. Depending on how well your fall sown seeds grew they may flower this year. And those from the bare roots are very likely to flower this spring. Lynda |

| Icebear, Gardens Alive has anti-slug product called escargo- I used it once or twice and it got rid of the slugs. And it will not harm your pets or children. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Escar-go
|
| Ellenrr, several companies make the iron phosphate baits like Escar-go and nearly every garden store, box store has them. Worry Free, Sluggo, Gs(Shultz Garden Safe) Snail and Slug, even Ortho has one called Ecosense that WalMart carried last year. It's OK to shop by price, same active ingredient. |
