The Official 2009/210 Container Count-part seven

Please post here AFTER the other thread is full!!

We're up to number SEVEN already!!!

the definition of a "container" ???
well it's very loosely defined as:

#1... If you use toilet paper rolls, newspaper pots, plant bands, paper cups, peat pots, etc and pack these together under one cover, then perhaps the best way to count these is to count the number of different seeds sown.
Example : 10 different kinds of seeds sown under 1 cover could be counted as 10 containers.

#2... 50 seeds sown in a milk jug or other larger container should count as 1 container.

Posting container count:

Please post only NEW containers and not a running total.
Example: If your 1st post is 30 containers and you later sow another 30 containers your 2nd post should reflect only the additional 30 containers.
You can post your total as long as you indicate the number of new containers.
Example: "Zone 5 : Add 30 more containers for me. My total is now 60. "

Remember to add your zone to each post so we can see totals by zone.

I will update the totals on a regular basis and start a new post as needed.

RE: The Official 2009/210 Container Count-part seven

Please add 108 containers to Zone 5. I'm a first-time wintersower. Meant to start last Winter, but family obligations (and a little bit of depression not to mention more than a little bit of laziness) kept me from starting then. My containers are all gallon jugs; some of the seeds sown came from newbie packs offered on this forum, the 2008 Secret Santa Seed Swap and SASE offers from WS.org (thanks, Trudi!). So far, I've sown lupines, astilbe, several foxgloves, garlic chives, Shasta daisies, feverfew, perennial salvias, helenium, coreopsis, bunching onions, echinaceas, sweet peas (several), yarrow, several varieties of hollyhocks --- and other perennials. I've more perennials to do and then will start on the annuals and the veggies.

Newbie "oops" right off the bat (besides sowing too many seeds per jug, I've now concluded!) --- jugs #1 and #2 sown with 15 seeds each of red "Tutti Frutti" lupine from the S.S.S. swap ("Hey, this is fun!"). Then, I thought I sowed 24 seeds of Dianthus "Siberian Blues" in jug #3. All tamped down pretty and ready to water. A look at the newly-seeded jug and it's labeled #1 --- not #3. I had over-sown the lupines with the dianthus. Learned right then to put the plant label in the dirt as soon as it was seeded. There will be many more mistakes along the way, I bet.

BUT!!! Folks here on this forum sharing their ideas, successes and failures aim us down the right path. And, as far as enablers, you all rock. I don't post often, hardly ever. Good thing because, as you can see, once I get going I don't stop :o) I read most of the new posts daily, search the old posts for information and insight in the wee hours when I can't sleep. I can't wait for the day when I can post that I have sprouts, too.

dirtygert WELCOME! Isn't this great? Glad you got going. I don't think the amount of containers you sowed was too many. Maybe cause I am in year 2 and my total is over 180. that includes 15 large water cooler bottles that held a lot of seeds!!

Glad you are here dirtygert

I think we usually end on May 1st. Maybe someone can either back me up or correct me...?

Brandy, are those numbers for zone 6 right? I just wonder because in the counts for the 19th and 20th of March you had SIX thousand, not THREE....

Geez, I'm hoping we're up to six-thousand. Otherwise zone five is destroying us, lol!

Thanks,
:)
