| This is the fifth thread in the official Winter Sowing Container Count (affectionately known as Zone Wars).
The count runs from Dec 22, 2011 - May 1, 2012 Everyone is welcome to participate! To participate you simply post on this thread the number of containers you have wintersown. You can post daily, weekly, etc. Each time you post, please include your total count so far. For example:
How To Count Containers:
How to List your Zone:
If your member page does not list a zone, you must include the zone in your post. For example: If your member pages lists you on the border of 2 zones (such as 7b/8a) you need to decide which team to join for Zone Wars, and include it in your post. Or you can revise your member page and put 7b from now until May 1. Then after May 1 change it back to 7b/8a. To see the latest count, click on the Container Count / Zone Wars Spreadsheet. To see previous Container Count threads, click on this list of Zone Wars Threads prepared by River_crossroads.
Everyone who is winter sowing is encouraged to participate.
Chatting, support, suggestions, and friendly rivalry are encouraged.
Every container counts so join the fun!! ~ Happy Sowing ~ |

After 5, yes Five, attempts and tons of lost seeds and containers, I can finaly add to the zone war count. I am just sorry it is such a very low number. | Hello Fellow WS'ers! Gosh, I have been one busy gardener/farmer! So, needless to say I have not been keeping up with anything inside, including being online. I have however sowed some more since my last post many moons ago. In fact, I have sowed another 351 containers for a grand total of 714! I do have a few things I still want to start, but it looks like they just might have to be direct sowed this year reusing the 2-Liter lids on top of them and the soil until they sprout. My fingers are dirty, my body is tired - but to look out and see all the beautiful growth from this year and last, makes me one happy wintersower! Especially the special ones from last year that did not flower, but now are covered with blooms like my Foxglove, Canterbury bells and hopefully soon Lupine! Thank you again Trudi - I'm hooked, for many years to come, I'm sure! Grand Total: 714 containers Zone 7! ~Best Wishes to all of you ~ Lisa/NC |

"I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green."...Nathaniel Hawthorne "My heart found its home long ago in the beauty, mystery, order and disorder of the flowering earth."...Lady Bird Johnson |

| 20 more for Zone 5. YTD 280 I'm done, met my goal of under 300 containers this year. Sounds like a lot, but for me it's not much at all. Especially when 9 years ago I was well over 1000 containers. That first year, WS Newbie stuff and you just sow and sow and sow. Been cutting back now since the first year. Most of the beds are really full now and will only get the rare perennial now and will be doing just annuals. But it's WS for them too. HAPPY GARDENING TO EVERYONE, PLANTING THOSE SEEDLINGS AND LOVING ALL THE BLOOMS FROM THEM Fran |

|
| Just got in under the wire! Please add 20 for Zone 8. My final total is 366 - whew! I'll never get them all planted out, but that's not been the goal this year. My darling daughter is 1500 miles away and battling stage 4 breast cancer. Planting those jugs has been keeping my hands, heart and mind busy until she needs me. Thank you wintersowing forum for helping me stay calm. |

| I've gone through my seeds and made the final separation for WSing, direct sown flowers and direct sown veggies. I'm ready for the final push on my lunch hour and this evening. I have 2 half gallon milk jugs and 24 gallon milk jugs that I'd like to use up. I also have dozens of cups and a dozen two-liters as backup but I don't think I'll need that many. On second thought, I may move those melons from direct sown to WS. I think they would transplant well. |

| I've sown a total of 56 containers in Zone 6. I'm a WSing newbie. I sowed my first seeds about a month ago. Technically, I guess, that makes me a spring-sower. Although I've been a lurker at GW forums for a while, reading and learning, I just recently registered. WS is SO much fun - I just had to add my accomplishment to the count! ~jackie |
|
| Got the rest of the daylily seeds sowed tonight and I think I'm done with WSing! 12 more containers for zone 5. Final total 195 containers. |

| Hi all, About 2 and one-half hours to go - the deadline for posting is almost upon us! That's what Terrene has previously announced. Please note that Gardenweb uses Eastern Daylight Time (Summer Time) for the date and time stamp. Any post dated Wednesday, May 2 does NOT count as we want to wrap this up and announce the winners! You can see the date and time that will be on your post when you take "Preview Message." It's at the end of the line with your screenname. Terrene has asked me to sort the spreadsheet and announce winners in various categories based on the sort. Exciting. Here is a link to a clock showing different time zones. You can check how your local time differs from Eastern Time used in Boston, New York, or other cities in that time zone. Thanks to everyone for your hard work and for a fun competition. See you later! Cities listed on link - Boston/New York vs Chicago/Dallas vs Denver/Salt Lake City vs San Francisco/Seattle |

Special thanks to Terrene for a terrific job, NancyPlants for her cheerful, colorful work, Bakemom for her newbie packs, and to our founder & leader, Trudi! I only do a few jugs but they are extremely important jugs. We are all winners and I thank you for the help that you give me. Congratulations to all you hard working people. Happy Gardening, everyone!

| Thank you Terrene (and all others involved!) for keeping count for us this year. I always enjoy coming here to check on the competition and the progress, and I especially enjoyed the quotes you added also - nice touch! Thank you! |
