Container Count / Zone Wars 2011-2012 ~ Official Count (5)

terrene

This is the fifth thread in the official Winter Sowing Container Count (affectionately known as Zone Wars).

The count runs from Dec 22, 2011 - May 1, 2012

Everyone is welcome to participate! To participate you simply post on this thread the number of containers you have wintersown. You can post daily, weekly, etc. Each time you post, please include your total count so far. For example:

'I sowed 5 more today for a total of 25 containers'.

How To Count Containers:

Each container, no matter the size, counts as one. However, if you feel your container is worth more than one, just use your judgment. Say, for example, you have one flat bin full of twenty cups with four different seeds. You can count it as 1, 4, or 20. The same for a lasagna pan you may plant several different types of seed in. Whatever you feel is right. We wont be peeking over your garden gate to count your containers ;)

How to List your Zone:

Make sure your zone is listed correctly on your member page so we can place you on the correct 'team'. You can edit your zone by clicking on Member Pages and then click Edit Your Personal Information, Page, and Preferences. You are welcome to use any guide you wish to determine your zone, as well as your own experience. If you are unsure of your zone, this Gardenweb page may help: Finding Your Zone.

If your member page does not list a zone, you must include the zone in your post. For example:
'I sowed 5 more today for Zone 7 for a total of 25 containers'.

If your member pages lists you on the border of 2 zones (such as 7b/8a) you need to decide which team to join for Zone Wars, and include it in your post. Or you can revise your member page and put 7b from now until May 1. Then after May 1 change it back to 7b/8a.

To see the latest count, click on the Container Count / Zone Wars Spreadsheet.

To see previous Container Count threads, click on this list of Zone Wars Threads prepared by River_crossroads.

Everyone who is winter sowing is encouraged to participate.

Chatting, support, suggestions, and friendly rivalry are encouraged.

Every container counts so join the fun!!

    17 containers for z5 for pixie_lou
    548 containers YTD

I only have 1 packet of seeds left. But sadly only 3 containers. Looks like I need to make a few trips to Dunkin Donuts and Dairy Queen over the next few days to collect those large plastic cups!

planted 10 more half gal jugs for zone 5 making my total top 100 at 106 milk jugs. I am hooked on the half gallon milk jug. They hold each other in place in their corral of 2 x 4's and brick so the wind has not budged them. They look almost neat too.

28 more jugs planted for a total of 129.
(I didn't plant all of them today, but since I last reported.)

Good morning, winter sowers. Well there's only about 8 more days in the count. Time to push and get that last bit of sowing done! I prepared some containers yesterday by filling them with soil, and put them out on the deck to get rained on (yippee rain!). The easiest way I've used so far to wet the potting mix. Now to get the last bit of sowing done.

Hi Terrene, I tried to do a custom countdown to May 1 in a post but only readymade banners seem to be allowed. Please check countdown time. To get this countdown click on company page (I took "Generate Raw URL") or right click and copy from below in View Page Source. I have been tied up with bugs - warm winter equals lots of bugs! Ok, my very first post for the winter sowing here. I have had nothing but wind troubles this year. After 5, yes Five, attempts and tons of lost seeds and containers, I can finaly add to the zone war count. I am just sorry it is such a very low number. The wind has been so bad here that it even took the roof right off of my neighbors 16 by 28 ramada! So sorry zone five. But I will be better set up for next year.

Add 12 more containers for zone 5 so my total is 118.These are my only containers that are not half gallon milk jugs. They are upside down bottomless quart yogurt cups with the lid on the bottom and topped by a bottomless 2 liter soda bottle for a hot cap. Yet another experiment to protect tomatoes from late frost.

    Hello Fellow WS'ers!
Gosh, I have been one busy gardener/farmer! So, needless to say I have not been keeping up with anything inside, including being online. I have however sowed some more since my last post many moons ago. In fact, I have sowed another 351 containers for a grand total of 714! I do have a few things I still want to start, but it looks like they just might have to be direct sowed this year reusing the 2-Liter lids on top of them and the soil until they sprout.
My fingers are dirty, my body is tired - but to look out and see all the beautiful growth from this year and last, makes me one happy wintersower! Especially the special ones from last year that did not flower, but now are covered with blooms like my Foxglove, Canterbury bells and hopefully soon Lupine! Thank you again Trudi - I'm hooked, for many years to come, I'm sure!

I'm done, met my goal of under 300 containers this year. Sounds like a lot, but for me it's not much at all. Especially when 9 years ago I was well over 1000 containers.

That first year, WS Newbie stuff and you just sow and sow and sow.

Been cutting back now since the first year. Most of the beds are really full now and will only get the rare perennial now and will be doing just annuals.

But it's WS for them too.

I've gone through my seeds and made the final separation for WSing, direct sown flowers and direct sown veggies. I'm ready for the final push on my lunch hour and this evening. I have 2 half gallon milk jugs and 24 gallon milk jugs that I'd like to use up. I also have dozens of cups and a dozen two-liters as backup but I don't think I'll need that many.

On second thought, I may move those melons from direct sown to WS. I think they would transplant well.

  • jackalar

I've sown a total of 56 containers in Zone 6.

I'm a WSing newbie. I sowed my first seeds about a month ago. Technically, I guess, that makes me a spring-sower. Although I've been a lurker at GW forums for a while, reading and learning, I just recently registered. WS is SO much fun - I just had to add my accomplishment to the count!

    Hi all,

About 2 and one-half hours to go - the deadline for posting is almost upon us!

Deadline to post containers for Zone Wars: 11:59 pm (23:59) tonight! (Eastern Daylight Time)

That's what Terrene has previously announced. Please note that Gardenweb uses Eastern Daylight Time (Summer Time) for the date and time stamp. Any post dated Wednesday, May 2 does NOT count as we want to wrap this up and announce the winners!

You can see the date and time that will be on your post when you take "Preview Message." It's at the end of the line with your screenname.

Terrene has asked me to sort the spreadsheet and announce winners in various categories based on the sort. Exciting.

Here is a link to a clock showing different time zones. You can check how your local time differs from Eastern Time used in Boston, New York, or other cities in that time zone. Thanks to everyone for your hard work and for a fun competition. See you later!
