Hi all,
Wondering if anyone has ever sown this ornamental rice? I just ordered some from Park's during their free shipping. Trying to decide if I could winter sow it or not in the next few weeks? |

You can WS it if you want, but it doesn't need it in order to germinate. Put it out now, and it'll germinate when it's ready...when the soil warms up. It's going to need a very wet location in full sun, when you get it going.

Thanks a lot for the input. I am going to try to experiment with it near the end of a rain chain and hope that provides the moisture, if not I'll add more (h20) and see what happens. Maybe I'll try some WS and DS as well.

Going on the info I got from wintersown.org, I chose to start my BMOR (also from Parks)on a heat mat, under grow lights,on Feb.20. They germinated within the week, and are now in my other bedroom window, 17 2 inch peat pots with 2 plants each, about 4-5 inches tall! Planted them way too early? So you probably still have time to plant them! BTW, these are one of very few seeds that I have ever had luck with, using the heatmat, grow light system, and I've tried just about everything. They start out well, and end up as next to nothing! However, this might be a "better than most" year, I also have Red Texas Hummingbird Sage, Peach Impatiens, Fuller's Teasel, Purple Angelonia and Stinging Nettle (for a butterfly host)growing really well up there! I am really excited about the winter sowing, have lots of containers and flats out in my backyard! Good luck with the BMOR!!

Seeded using heat mat and light - excellent germination. Now individually transplanted in 3" pots. However, when ready, how many plants do you recommend to put in each large container to look really good? Right now, they look a little thin. Thanks.

I planted 2 each in 2 wooden boxes out front, sun almost all day long; am waiting to see if they come back; didn't do much out there, but didn't die. I think they get pretty tall; so maybe 2 for each container? Also have 2 upstairs that didn't get planted out; one looks like it's kicking the bucket. The Purple Angelonia bit the dust before I could get it outside; the stinging nettle and the fuller's teasel did very well; the stinging nettle was attracting the red admirals before I could get it into the ground!
