I think eggplants, Okra, peas are warm loving veggies. When do you winter sow them? Do you even recommend winter sowing them or just plant seeds directly in the ground after danger of frost?

I'm in zone 7 so we may have a little difference.I usually direct sow my peas and okra right around the 15th of April. That assures me of no more frost unless it is a freak year. You can go ahead now and ws things like eggplants, cabbage, peppers, tomatoes to have plants to set out.I actually planted those about 2 weeks ago and they are up.I sow about 8 rows of peas and 4 rows of okra and I have never had any problem direct sowing these, along with beans, corn, squash, things that don't need wsing.I always soak my okra over night in warm water..? just the way my dad did it..hope this helps some. moonphase

Do you think it will be a good idea to direct sow seeds 2 weeks prior to last frost date? assuming it takes 2 weeks for seeds to sprout? I think frost can kill seedlings but not sure if it is bad for the seeds.

I soaked my peas in water for about 8 hours, then put them in a ziploc with a damp paper towel until they sprouted (24 hours or so). Then I just planted them. The ones I set out the end of January are fine... they can handle frost and even snow. If you can work your soil (it's not frozen or muddy) then go ahead and direct plant them.

peas can be planted earlier than okra.I have found that okra here is not gonna sprout until the soil warms up.I have already tilled my garden area and a trick I learned is,I cover the soil with black plastic and leave it on there until I start planting in April. The soil has warmed and no weeds sprouting ;-) moonphase
