WS Leonotis?

Has anyone tried WS Leonotis staircase or Leonotis leonurus? I have read that it is only hardy to zone 9, but others in places like Indiana zone 5 say they have had it come back. I'm not sure what to do here. Should I wait until April on these? Also, for anyone that has grown it in my zone, will it bloom in time for the hummingbirds?

RE: WS Leonotis?

I grew this last year and it bloomed beautifully! I did not WS though. I think I sowed the seeds around the end of May. Beautiful plant.

RE: WS Leonotis?

It might come back from self sow - doubtful otherwise as it is only hardy to Z 8 at best. And as you are likely well aware - sometimes it is very hard to tell what is a plant that has come back versus a new plant from self sow.

RE: WS Leonotis?

Thanks for the responses. Bellarosa, were the hummingbirds attracted to it.and when did it bloom for you?

RE: WS Leonotis?

They bloomed around mid-July. I wish I took some pics of them. They were so unusual. I don't remember seeing any hummingbirds near them. I'm going to try growing them again - they were actually pretty easy to grow - and I'll make sure to check for hummingbirds!

RE: WS Leonotis?

I decided to grow them indoors. They took a few weeks to sprout. I sowed both the staircase and the verigated variety. I can't wait to them in full bloom. I hope they attract the hummingbirds!
