I'm just getting ready to wintersow my tomatoes. What are your favorite slicing tomatoes and why?

According to the DH, the best tasting tomato of last year was a Cherokee Purple. He also liked Kosovo (a heart type). Unfortunately, neither of these produced well for me last year. Early Girl and Stump of the World were also good-tasting, and produced a lot more fruit than the others. I also like Sibirskij Stambovyj because it is short (good for growing in a container), and early. The fruits are only a little bigger in size than a cherry tomato, but they taste like a slicing tomato.

Without a doubt my Black Krim was the best. Mortgage Lifter was a close second followed by Cherokee Purple.

Black Krim, Cherokee Purple, Pineapple, and Paul Robeson. I agree that the CP is not a big producer. This is my experience with BK and PR, too. I don't know if this is an heirloom or black tomato or garden(er) "thing." I gave up on Brandywine because I only got one tomato in two years--tons of flowers and fruit was too slow to develop. However, the taste of the black tomatoes is so good that I just plant more to have more fruits. :)

My tomatoes last year did not get going real well. I had some real slow producers. I got some Matt's wild cherry, some ealry girl and others hoping to get a mix that will give me something this year. I cannot go another year with out tomatoes. I also plan to order some plants to supplement my WS seeds. I found a site where the plants are cheap... Karen

Karen, a blogger named Mr. Brown Thumb is from the Chicago area and he said that he would give us followers a heads up on when and where we could get cheap, local grown tomato plants. He said the average price was $2, though I'm sure you can't get the selection that you have on that website. But thought I'd throw it out there :o)
