Well, Kiss My Garden Gate!

I never expected germination from this, as it seems to be fussy even when the seed is new - I sowed Kiss Me Over the Garden Gate, seeds from a 2008 trade, on January 28, and found two nice, healthy sprouts in it yesterday. You could have knocked me over with a feather!

Is it fussy? My parents gave me an old packet a few years ago. I direct sowed and it didn't do anything that year but the following year it grew! Wasn't a spectacular show though and I haven't seen it since.

Drippy,

I have that plant growing here and have shared seeds all over the garden web. I'm pretty sure the germination was good because I have seen several pics posted by people I sent them too.

I'm pretty sure that if you leave the seeds on the plant almost until they fall, they will germinate when winter sown the folowing year.I planted one in 2008/9 and have had it since. I have potted up dozens in the spring to give away because it's so prolific here.

Good Luck!

Lisa

I got some seed from Yvonne. I don't know where I can plant them. I understand they can take over.

I guess I've seen others on the forum say they've had trouble germinating this, and it has to be fresh seed, etc. I had it one year, and then tried to WS for a few years after without success, and then just stopped trying for a few years. I just WS these 'because they were there', and was surprised that 4 year old seed of this plant would germinate.

Well Congratulations Drippy!! LOL - I have 'seen' you and others trying for a couple years to get these to germinate! lol - I tried once,,once, didnt work, obviously.
I seen a seed catalog trying to pass off annual love lies bleeding as KMOGG, but I'm a WSForum lurker, so I know better! ;)
IShare - I think you are just a few towns over from me -you say they are prolific and you have seed? hmmm..maybe I could get some? or a start? lol

This makes me want to try it again! I sowed it indoors one year & had beautiful plants, but haven't had success germinating it since. I think it's a gorgeous cottage garden type & would love to have it again! Congratulations Drippy with yours, woo hoo!

Congratulations, Drippy. Yes, I too remember lots of people having trouble getting them started over the years.

Drippy you are giving me hope...I too have had trouble with KMOTGG. I will take a peek in the jug with fingers crossed and get back to you. I also sowed older seeds.

ohsillyme, contact me in about a month, if it goes like it has for the last few years, I will have plenty of volunteers to pot up for you.

Congrats, drippy! May your KMOTGG grow and prosper ...

I've decided that this plant just does not like me. I've tried from seed - bought and traded - with no success. Lisa (ishareflowers) sent me seed - no success. She also sent me a ton of volunteers last year; most of the ones I gave away did well for their new owners, while most of what I kept for myself did not do so well. I had two remaining plants that were trying their best, but as soon as they got some height, something kept chewing the tops off. Never could figure out what was doing it. After a while, they gave up the ghost too. It's really frustrating, so I've given up on ever having it.

For now, anyway.

Grr... I mean, congratulations, lol! I wish I knew your secret! After 8 years, I've given up. My friend has grown it successfully, so I may just ask her to srart a few seeds for me and plant those, and then hope for reseeding.

Congratulations, and enjoy!

I'm going to soak mine in fish emulsion with a touch of peroxide and cross my fingers.

Guess what! I have sprouts! I sowed a milk jug of seeds in early February in true Winter-sowing fashion and a cup of seeds that have been hanging out in the un-heated greenhouse (walk in container) in March. Fingers crossed that they thrive!!!!

RE: Well, Kiss My Garden Gate!

Hi Gardeners,
I haven't posted her for awhile. I was looking to see how long kiss me over the garden gate seeds last because I have some still on the dried stem that I thought about taking to seed exchange. I can't remember whether they are from this year, last year, or the year before. They have just been in a paper envelope. I probably won't get a reply before it's time to go, but if you know, I could still give them to someone. I already have them self sow pretty well.

I've seen this plant discussed a lot on here over the years so congrats on getting it to germinate.
