Hi Pony, I put most of the perennials, trees, and shrubs on the East side, where they get morning sun and wintry conditions. I'm getting ready to sow a bunch of annuals, veggies like tomatoes and other heat lovers, and I place those on the South side of the house right up next to the foundation. They get pretty good sun and warmth there, and are protected from frost, until the trees get their leaves in May.

Yes, if your containers are in full sun on the south side they can over-heat and dry out more quickly. I sow my annuals in cups that are lined up in plastic boxes (old refrigerator drawers or old plastic containers). I don't usually cover them, also they get watered from the bottom, which minimizes potential problems.

Mine are on the west side simply because that's the back yard. I've noticed some drying out this year, which is odd because it's been so wet. I wonder if having them on the table rather than the ground has made a difference. Maybe they drain faster? It's an open mesh-type table.
