Is there a compiled list of zones and best times to winter sow types of plants according to their zone?
Thanks
Sarah

RE: Zone calendar

I'm guessing there is not the kind of detailed info you're hoping for. One of the benefits of wintersowing is that it is so flexible and forgiving. You really can put any seed out at what ever time is convenient for you, and the seed will do it's thing whenever the climate is right for it. And climates will vary from one yard to another, even on the same block, depending on shade, wind, altitude, etc. A house in a protected hollow will stay cooler and moister than one on top of a hill, for example. The only problem you might run into is some of the most tender annual seeds can mold or rot if they are planted too early and spend too much time in a cold, wet container. Those can be sown as soon as the weather is warming up. And they generally germinate quite quickly anyway, so waiting to sow them doesn't slow their development or bloom time at all.

Does that help? I, personally, don't pay any attention to germination requirements. I just plant perennials early and annuals late. I also don't try much that is known to be finicky. I tend toward the natives and what ever makes the birds and butterflies happy. I did just findout, incidentally, that delphiniums need dark to germinate, so I put out another container of those and covered the seeds. Maybe I'll have better luck. But, I plant so many containers that I don't have time to be disappointed if something doesn't sprout. I'm too busy trying to get my successes into the ground.

Good luck and relax. Happy sowing.

RE: Zone calendar

That does help! Its my first year as and I started last week, but we haven't had much winter here yet. I guess I need to stop thinking about times I would stArt in doors and just keep a journal of what happened!

Thanks!

Happy gardening!
