When you say slits, are they holes or just actually slits? Did you see water draining out?

I took a tip from the Creelway method and put about a dozen holes in my half gallon milk jugs this year. Not slits. they are draining fine when I watered them .It has been very dry in Iowa but we have rain predicted all this week so I am glad I did it. Also I stopped adding any local dirt to pots or w.s. containers . The clay clogs the holes

Cut some vents in the sides of the jugs near the bottom - that will help them to drain better. From your description, it seems you may not have made enough drainage holes/slits.

Yes when I say slits I mean no holes. The type of Soil I used could have plugged my slits. I will put more holes, some on the side and make sure it is able to drain. My only worry is if you put too much, the soil may run dry.

You need to open the slits. Just stick something into the slit- like a knife of point of scissors, and twist. I use multiple holes about 1/4" in diameter.

Little, if any, soil will come out. Not an issue.

Take a sharp knife and by the base stab one wall of the jug. Twist the knife a bit to allow immediate drainage. Then walk away and do something else for a while. A few hours later come back and look at the jug. If it still seems soggy then stab and twist one other wall.
