I planted 2 per 2 qt sized jug. They were fine. I didn't use a divider.

It's surprising how much you can squish tomatoes together for sprouting, and then when they have their second sets of leaves VERY gently pull the root masses apart and replant and they're fine. I have accidentally dropped two seeds into one hole many times and been able to gently separate them and re-pot them when the time came and they didn't seem to care. It's not IDEAL but they are fairly forgiving over having their roots disturbed.

I use 2 liter bottles, and I plant 4 tomato seeds per jug. I have done that for years, and they are always just fine.. When they have their first true set of leaves- the roots aren't very big anyway, so there is not much if any disturbing them. Just use a fork to gently lift under each plant and raise the little beauties up and out for planting..

I put nine tomato seeds in a gallon milk jug and they've always been fine. I give them more room when they've got real leaves, or just plant them direct to the garden from the jug.

thanks for the input everyone - I was afraid the roots would get too tangled, which is why I divided the jugs. I wanted to leave the tomatoes in the jugs until they were a decent size. No germination yet on the tomatoes.
