Zone 4 and Colder-What is everyone sowing?

I am a newbie and have read the Faq's etc. But wondered what seeds others in our zones have started to winter sow and when you started the seeds?

I had posted a question in the Rocky Mountain region forum about starting Verbena Bonariensis from seed since my budget wasn't very big to purchase the number of plants I would like to have for our bird, bee and butterfly gardens. Someone did suggest winter sowing them due to their cold stratification needs.

These are some seeds I would like to sow but it looks like I will have to wait a little while longer:

Tithonia
Lions Tail
Cleome
Cosmo "Cosimo Dancing Dolls"
Zinnia "Peppermint Stick" Request from my son :)
Nicotiana "Woodland"
Gaura (Although I can't find Siskiyou pink seeds) I don't know if mine overwintered very well

I usually order my tomatoes from Laurel's Heirlooms but we may experiment with some seeds.
