Garden design

The post about garden indecision led me to think about this-

as I said, I garden in 3 rectangles, (community garden) and it occurs to me that is why I am enamoured of paths - they break up the space.

I use big rocks to make paths, and different size and shape beds to create interest. The one thing I saw on a walk is someone whose lawn if about four feet over street level and they have a descending rock garden which I thot was really interesting. I haven't figured out a way to create that!

What are your design techniques, and what look do you like to create?

I like the naturalistic look, so all my beds are formed of tree branches and rocks.
