My problem with that type of containers is no head room for seedlings.

I have heard a few people mention using disposable baking/lasagna pans from the dollar store. I tried the Chinese food containers (the round white ones with the clear tops), but I don't think they are deep enough for most seeds - especially for a month or two of growth.

As long as you have 3-4 inches of soil,you can use anything,I place mine in cardboard boxes,place plastic over the box, and have plenty of head room for growth,works for me

This is my third year WS, and I now almost exclusively use the aluminum salad containers with clear covers. These containers are low and flat, with minimal head room, but have worked the best for me. I have no patience for cutting water or milk jugs (cut myself the first time I tried it. Oh well). I just save the containers over the summer from my lunches. They store stacked into each other and take up less room, too. My sunflowers sprouted while there was still snow on the ground, but the ones that have gotten big enough are now potted up. If we get a frost I intend to just put them in boxes or some other sort of larger container, and cover them with plastic for the night, similar to what cAROL does.

Been using them now for 8 years without any problems. We've had 60 mile an hour winds and they are fine, more than a foot of water in the yards and the "float just fine as well", unlike the gallon jugs and 2 liter bottles that fell over and drowned in the floods we've had over the past 8 years.

Had more than enough room for the seedlings to grow, just enlarge the air holes in the covers if need be and open them as needed.

Wouldn't go without these containers, along with the ones from sour cream, cottage cheese, margarine etc.
