Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

I sowed them on April 7, and I'm a little worried that I see nothing so far.
These are seeds I gathered myself, so I know the seeds are good.
Maybe they take longer than the other Salvia.

I really want these.
Is anybody else having results?

I sowed them about 3 weeks ago, and no sprouts yet. These things usually germinate like weeds. I usually get tons of volunteers too, but I've just started to see a few volunteers in recent days. Hopefully the ones in the jugs will sprout soon.

Self sown are just popping up in the garden bed. I've had sprouts for a couple weeks now, some already planted out. It was unseasonably warm here for a week with temps in the 90s and no rain. They do like heat. Give them full sun and lots of water every morning.

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

I'm a little late and just planting them as we speak.

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

i also sowed them 2 weeks ago together with other seeds, only my yvonne's salvia and mini lobata hasn't germinated yet and i really want it this season... hope it germinates soon. until when should i wait before i give up?

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

I sowed YS about 2 weeks ago and not a sign of sprouts yet. But we've not had too much warmth since then, so I am thinking they are just waiting for more sunshine. I also sowed an annual salvia named "Dreamsicle" at that time and it, too, is sproutless. I did get a couple of tiny sprouts in my annual verbena over the weekend, so I bet the salvia is not far behind.

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

FWIK Salvais like it REALLY warm like 70 to 75 deg's consistently.

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

Yep. I've still got some special salvias to grow. I'm hoping to get them sown this week if the temperatures cooperate. Siting them in part sun helps too. On concrete. I water sometimes twice a day if it's sunny.

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

For the first time in many years I am not going to sow Yvonne's salvia, running out of space and energy. Think I saw one self seeded sprout today while I was giving a friend a tour.

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

This is my third year growing Yvonne's Salvia and I continue to because hummingbirds will fly in front of them and dance!! What a sight to behold!!

The first year I had ten seeds, WS'd them on April 19 and I had 100% germination April 27. BUT they grew so SLOWLY, that I could not get them in the ground until June 23,barely 2 inches tall, and they stayed small until August when they shot up. They flowered late (Sept) and it was difficult to collect seeds. The seeds collected only yielded 40% germination, started in damp coffee filters, and only germinated 'when I placed them under lights'. I was able to plant out about one week earlier and my blooms were earlier. I also collected seed last year. I have purposely done the same this year, and the germination is about 50%: Sowed April 10 with bottom heat and nothing; moved under lights April 19, germination April 21. I have five little seedlings growing well under my lights. I sowed a second set April 21, and got germination (50%) April 24 (under lights). I will pot them up tomorrow. I have read many times that some seeds need light to germinate and thought it a little obvious, but I have found it works for these Salvia. I will try the same for my Salvia exserta because that is also a bit difficult to get going.

I think my low germination rates are due to the late blooming. The first seeds I received were really black and hard. Many of the seeds I get crumble when rolled between the thumbs, and I keep the hardest of the lot, but I think proper ripening in full sun produces the best seed. I am content with my 50% germination - it's no surprise so I can sow accordingly.

RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

My blue Salvia sprouts in a couple of weeks or less, so that's why I'm surprised.

Maybe I'm not watering enough.

Do you that talked about watering - you water that much even while they are seeds, not sprouted?
I am always less water-aware if they are seeds.

And yes, the self-seeders are coming up. :)

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

Ellen, you have to keep the seeds moist during the germination phase. If they dry out during that time, it can kill the embryo once the shell is cracked. That's why I water so much. With good draining soil, there's no problem. If the soil is wet or soggy, you obviously wouldn't water as much.

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

thanks Token,
that might account for why some things don't make it -
cuz I have not been very conscious about water when they are in the seed stage.
One thing I don't have to worry about right now.
After two days of rain, I am trying to let things dry out.

well if nothing pops, I have more Yvonne salvia to sow.

still learning, :)

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

I just checked- no sprouts in mine yet. A few volunteers are up in a few areas, but not all over the bed as generally happens. It's just not warm enough for them, in jugs or in the ground. It's only 56° here now, most likely our high for the day. Frost in precicted for tonight.

Ellen, token is probably getting much warmer temps than we are, hence the need for more watering. Like yours, mine are still soaked from days of rain and cold weather. They drain the excess, but not much evaporation going on in this weather. We had several dry weeks with some warm days- I was watering then.

RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

Remember, we went nearly 3 weeks without rain. We've only gotten a little in the past week. So that's why I water more. And it was 92 degrees for 3 or 4 days a couple weeks ago. Must water every day at that point, even in the shade with the tops off.

I haven't sown any Yvonne's since 2008 - just do not have the space. But reading this thread makes me want to sow some - if I can't shoe-horn it in up here, I can always give it away. Last time, I didn't sow it until 5/10 and it took about 2 weeks to germinate.

RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

I looked at a picture of Salvia Yvonne. They're very pretty. I want some seeds please! I have seeds to trade :)

Also, if we plant them today, will they flower this year?

yvonne's seed

Hi Tom,

I saw your Yvonne here! It is SO beautiful! :)

Do you still have seeds left? :P

Thanks,

Neil

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

Mine did bloom the first year.
sorry I have no seeds, but will have next year.
(assuming these guys germinate!)

 o
RE: pic of Yvonne's salvia

Token,
I like the way yours look in the woods.
(above link)
I didn't know they could grow in shade.
Mine got 2 feet tall, beautiful blooms.

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

My annuals, including Yvonne's salvia, haven't sprouted yet. It's almost May!

RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

token28001,

Please disregard my question. I was able to do seed exchange with someone at Seed Exchange.

Thanks.

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

We are having a very warm day here today and LO and BEHOLD - the yvonne's are geminating!!! I've got at least 8 sprouts just breaking the surface since last night. The like it warm, they like it warm, they like it warm....

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

well they ought to like it here too.
Yesterday 88 and sunny, today forecast the same.

I have only seen one Yvonne seedling, which was a dead one. :<

I'll give it a month from time of germination, and that's it.

Very odd, the last 10 containers, sown staring April 7, have not show one single sprout.

that's never happened to me.

I'm having to go out and buy a lot of plants. (not exactly a bad thing!)

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

I have a few sprouts so far - they are still tiny though.

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

Neil, I didn't have any seeds left anyway. I've already sown what I saved for myself this year.

Ellen, mine gets late day sun from about 3pm until 8pm in summer. It helps that it's usually 90+ and humid while they're blooming. Mine were over 4' tall last year.

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

No problem Tom!

So the person(the one who will give me seed) told me he just direct sow this type of salvia. Does direct sowing folks also works for you?

In zone 5, how far apart should I put the seeds? I saw a pic of this salvia in zone 8, it was humongous!

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

My first two seeds sprouted yesterday. Lots of volunteers are popping up since the rainy weekend. I'm not expecting much from these this year.

Karen

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

I just sowed mine 2 days ago. A couple weeks later than I wanted, but have been too busy. They are from seed collected in 2008 because 2009 was so cool and rainy that the Yvonnes plants were smaller and slower than the year before and didn't set seed. I expect decent germination as I collected these and did a germination test whereas about 50% of the seeds sprouted.

I love these plants and so do the hummers - couldn't be without them. I also sowed Salvia 'Lady in Red' and 'Coral Nymph'. Just wish I had more sun to grow more of them!

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

well the verdict is in on my seeds.
Did the wet paper towel routine- not a sign of life.
Strange they look the same as the seeds of last year which grew wildly.
well next year I'll be here seeking Yvonne seeds, so save me some. :)

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

YS has decided it is warm enough! I have many sprouts now, just two leaves but they look stocky and healthy.

Except I give up their "real estate" to a new crop of hollyhocks......I'll have to find another spot (not easy - it is getting PACKED out there!)

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

I sowed yvonne's salvia in my greenhouse and nothing germinated, so i sowed it inside the house and still nothing germinated for a week. i read someone say that it has to have heat, heat, heat. so what i did, i placed the 4" pot on top of the floor register one morning and voila! the next day i had 1 sprout and the following day i had 3 more sprouts! love my registers! hahaha!

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

Karen,

How are your yvonne salvias? Do you have pictures?

Thanks!

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

Neil,

I haven't taken any pictures since July 4th
Photobucket

It has been too hot and sunny for pics- everything would just look washed out. Hot and sunny every day. We we on vacation last week and, as usual, the flowers missed me a lot. Everything dried badly, little to no rain, leaves are yellowing, plants are setting seed and wanting to go dormant. Powdery mildew is going wild.

Too many days in the mid 90s and they say we might break into the triple digits this week. I give up.

Karen

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

Karen,

At least you got some flowers. Mine are still only about 4" tall! I don't know what the heck is wrong with them??? After a few days reprieve, we are going to be back in the upper 80's and 90's this week, with the humidity as well. It's always about this time I look forward to Sept and fall.

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

My salvias are very short too. I think I started them too late. I also direct sowed them which is not a good idea. Maybe I should winter sow them. Should I? Are they frost hardy like bachelor buttons or the calendulas?

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

I always wintersowed them before. This past year only a few WSown ones sprouted, so I don't know what was up with that. This year most of mine were volunteers.

My germination on most of my wintersown stuff was bad this year. Then it got blown away in a windstorm...

Karen

 o
RE: Yvonne's salvia

And sorry Neil, I forgot to answer. No, they're not frost hardy at all. They'll bite the dust at first sign of frost.

Karen

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

Mine spouted late, but now a few are not as tall as I expected but two of mine are really tall and have lots of blooms - Also, we've had temps everyday in mid to upper 90s - and I only bottom water these since we have had hardly any rain this summer...

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

I didn't have any Salvia Yvonne germindation :(
I did have Salvia Splendens but only 2. They're 10 inches tall including the flowers.

Does someone have extra seeds of Yvonne? I want to try again. Please. :)

Thanks Karen for the update.

Neil

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

Mine are only about 1 foot tall and only started to bloom a month or so ago. The blooms are very large, but I doubt that I will have time to get seeds. Sorry.

 o
RE: Anyone sow Yvonne's Salvia?

My Yvonne's Salvia finally grew up and is the only flower that's still growing in my garden. They're now 4' tall, but I only have 4 of them. I have to plant more next year...
