When do you start flowers?

Flowers such as zinnia, marigold, cosmos, columbine. When would you start WS? I don't know how long it takes them to sprout(i know it will be different for each flower), Don't want to start too soon either. I'm planning on sowing seed outside using winter sowing method and transplant them after the danger of frost which is 3rd week of may in my zone.

Is it ok to start them in 3rd week of April, give about 2 weeks to sprout and another 2 weeks to get them strong before they would go in ground.

Columbine is a perennial and as far as I know needs cold stratification. I winter sow columbine seeds in December-January. Last year I winter sowed cosmos on March 14; they sprouted on April 2. I haven't grown marigolds or zinnias so hopefully someone who has will post an answer on those.

I sowed my zinnias and cosmos just a few days ago, may be a bit early yet, but we'll see how it goes. I usually plant my annuals in April, 2nd or 3rd week, and plant out in mid-May when the danger of frost should be done. I think you'll be okay to wait. The columbine though need several weeks of cold then warmth to get them to sprout.

I just went out to look at my jugs to see what else may have sprouted, and my zinnias and cosmos I planted last Thursday and Saturday are sprouting. Yikes! I knew I should have waited another week or so. Oh well. It'll be a few weeks before they're big enough to be planted out anyway.

I noticed my cosmos sprout as well. They seem to belittle leggy. Do you have to move them in full sun? write now they are under roof overhang so they don't get sun all the time. I have it under roof overhand so they are protected from frost and heavy rain etc. Also it will be about a month before you can plant them in ground. Won't they all get crowded in 2 L bottle? Do you guys transplant them in some other container before you would put them in ground?

It's probably a good idea to move them where they'll get more sun, or else they'll reach for it. If they get to big for the jugs, I may have to pot them up or just plant them out, and if we're in for a frost then cover them with a sheet or newspaper. That's what I would do.
