Good luck on that rose, I hear it is beautiful.

Phlox paniculata (summer tall phlox), I have had the hardest time starting this from seed. Do birds eat phlox seed?? 2nd year in a row that I have tried to grow this and no sprouts here either. Phlox drummondi (I think that is the spelling) is easy cheesy for me to grow.

Oh and oriental poppy AGAIN I had sprouts and I never transplanted but they are having a hard problem producing true leaves before they die off. 2nd year on that one also.

Lupine treats me the same way CC's oriental poppies treat her: I get sprouts in the jug, plant them out, then they die. I am pretty sure the issue is my high-clay soil. So I found someone with a horse who will let me have some composted horse manure.... It's fully composted, and has become a soft, silky black and buoyant soil with, I am sure, lots of vitamins and minerals for the plants.

I have a few other things that have not yet sprouted, but I am still hoping they are just delayed because of the cold weather.

One thing I wish DIDN'T sprout are those darned lemon balm seeds that get everywhere, LOL. I have 2 suspected lemon balm seedlings masquerading as a blue poppy seedling and a primrose seedling. I don't dare pull them yet because I am not 100 percent sure... Ever since I ripped out the only hellebore seedling I ever had (I thought it was poison ivy because it had 3 leaves), I am a lot slower to clear out seedling suspects.

Thyme...ugh

Joe Pye has failed to sprout for me after 4 years of trying, so I gave up and bought a fire thorn bush for my wildlife instead, and since that is a bird food source and not a butterfly food source, I am waiting now for my milkweed seeds to germinate. Hopefully I will have luck with those.

KMOTGG. This is either my 6th or 7th attempt (maybe more, can't remember), and still nothing. I can't let a plant beat me, but this one is sure trying.

Sweet Autumn Clematis. I haven't given up yet and have them planted this year, but I've had no luck for three years running.

RE: What plant keeps eluding you??

KMOTGG. Sigh. I tried for 7 or 8 years (maybe more). I didn't try this year. PV, you're more persistent than I, lol, for trying again. I need a year off, lol!

Red Monarda. I've done direct sowing, HM/GL, bought the plants, I've tried everything but WSing. All I've got is one ratty looking plant, that puts out one bloom a year and acts like it doing me a favor-yes, I am taking this personally!
Will try WSing next year, and if that doesn't work, I'm done. I mean it.

The western Agastaches! Agastache rupestris, Agastache 'Purple Pygmy' and 'Apricot Sprite' - commercial seed, I tried these 3 years in a row, NOTHING. I've traded these seeds and other gardeners have gotten them to sprout, but not me. Oh well.

Also Passiflora incarnata - Maypops. Tried 2 years, nothing. There are others I don't remember at the moment.

I have 3 jugs of larkspur and 4 jugs of delphinium's. I got 3 1/2 sprouts out all put together.

The Sea Lavender keeps dying off too.

RE: What plant keeps eluding you??

Iberis, I love those early white blossoms but I can't get it to live more than the first year. Even when I buy plants with bloom, the next year they are gone. I believe it is hardy here as other people seem to be able to keep it growing.
I've got seeds out there again, a fool's errand I think.

RE: What plant keeps eluding you??

ladyrose, try direct sowing larkspur in late summer/early fall. Vera's tip, and it worked much better for me than WSing.

Platycodon eludes me. I sowed it for 4 or 5 years, not a sprout. I finally bought a plant a couple of years ago, wasn't so fond of it. It died out it's first winter. I'm over it, done with that plant.

Lupine--second and third sets of leaves, plant out, slug candy.

Blue Poppy--four years running and three sprouts that disappear before any true leaves appear.

I have seeds chilling to spring sow in three weeks. Five years and counting . . .

cheers,
Norabelle

Lois, I know it isn't funny to you, but your description cracked me up! It can be so frustrating gardening sometimes.

RE: What plant keeps eluding you??

Impatients. Tried winter sowing, starting under lights, starting in the greenhouse and nothing. Pelleted seeds, regular seeds and nothing.
So I just end up buying a few.

Come to think of it, these would be easy to propagate from cuttings. DUH! I'll just buy a select few and do that!

Thanks for letting me think out loud...LOL

I can't keep an orchid alive for very long. I feel so bad, buying them when I know I'm just going to end up murdering it. Can't help myself though. I have 2 right now, one is blooming, has been for a month and a half, the other I've had since July, it put out a new bloom stalk and I was SO EXCITED. Then the buds dried up and fell off. :(

Dirtbert- I have one bed where my impatients reseed like crazy. It's full sun in the spring, then my neighbors tree leafs out and gives it shade for the summer. I tried taking cuttings to save my favorites for this year, but they looked sad sad sad after about 2 months. Hopefully I get some lavender with pink center babies this year!

RE: What plant keeps eluding you??

Wallflower, and Linum flavum compactum (yellow flax). This is my third year to sow both, and I get germination every time, but they always die after I plant them out.
