lillyjane, for the last 2 yrs.I had took the tops off when my sprouts were small. This year I decided I was not going to until I was real close to our last frost date, the 15th here. These were getting so big I thought I had better give them some room.I have some that are not as big all the way down to very small sprouts and some just starting to sprout since I sow a few almost every day.I will not take the tops off of those until they are bigger or start getting stressed as the heat rises. It seems to have helped mine grow with the top on,so will continue this way and see how it goes. karen wish these kids would fly to the spot I have picked for them, lol. They are going to have to settle for their jugs for a little while longer until I get their new homes ready for them. moonphase |

Moonphase, Hi, thanks for the reply, I had 1 container of bb that sprouted & then half of then looked like they had melted, & I had 2 containers of dames rocket that came up & now they are all gone ? So I paniced & at the first sight of green I took the tops off, but I move them in the garage if there is a chance of frost. all the rest seem to be doing ok they are just staying green & not growing any but they are not dying either ") I will be glad when I know what I'm doing LOL I just hate the thought of losing any. Jan (lillyjane) ") |

| Me too Lilyjane. Also newbie and although I do have green Yay!, they don't seem to be getting any bigger. Yesterday temp hit 60's so they went topless because was afraid they'd rot --too damp. Seem to have pretty good germination though. Can't wait till they grow up and move on to their permanent homes LOL Your babies are awesome Moonphase! La Donna |

| Way to go moonphase, I hope mine look that good pretty soon! |

| Moonphase, You are so lucky! I hope mine get that big. I just found the first true set of leaves on my blanket flowers this weekend. My wife loves to watch me looking in the containers for new sprouts. I probably look like a little kid! Oh, and what you said about playing in dirt being the closest thing to heaven... I agree 150%. I wish they sold candles that smelled like dirt. |

| Wow, your sprouts are so big and healthy! Nice going. You have so many containers too. I think I'm one of the few winter sowers who sowed less this year than last. I guess I know how many plants I'll be getting :) I'm still sowing though, so who knows where I'll end up. I have one jug of a wildflower mix that sprouted early and are almost as tall as yours. Most of the rest are fairly small. You are a zone ahead, so that makes sense. Nice to know mine could be that tall in another month or so. I have transplanted a few hardy varieties into little pots to see if I can get a little early growth on a couple varieties. |

| Moonphase, Wowwww. They look amazing. I'm over in Rome. Mine are just little babies compared to yours. What container mix do you use? I ask because I'm having problems with my plain Jungle Growth. Do you fertilize? - Jonathan. |

| They look like they're in the sun. Are they? I normally don't use milk jugs for winter sowing because I like to see what's growing. I like the clearer containers. But I'm curious whether yours have been sitting in the sun with the tops on (lids removed) even though it's been in the seventies. I'm such a chicken and always move mine to mostly shade but have never had seedlings as bushy and green as that. |

| I think I removed my covers too early! My seedlings are teeny tiny compared to yours. I agree- do you fertilize or use a particular soil? wow! I am impressed! |

I only use miracle gro potting mix-not the soil.Yes,I put mine in full sun and there they stay until the tops come off, then if they start wilting any,I will move them under the butterfly bushes.Last week end was the first tops to come off.Now I wish I had not of taken any off because we are expecting a cold front.I also have more in another area on a stone path leading from my back steps to the herb garden.I have 2 portable green houses full of flats that are sprouting and about another 75-100 more containers on my screened porch.I sow about 10-20 containers almost daily.I have some big gardens to fill up and I love having lots of color.I will take more photos and let you see all my babies.I do not use fertilers until I plant them out.I will try to answer any questions you have and help in any way. moonphase |

| Oh my gosh, you have the bread looking crates to hold your containers in, that I have discovered are impossible to get from grocery stores and there are very few that have your height on the sides. Do you have a trick about getting them or is there plenty around your part of town? Your sprouts looks awesome and I can not wait to see what your garden looks like after you give all your babies a permanent home. |

| Wow! I whip the tops off my jugs as soon as they stop germinating! And, I get those babies into the ground as soon as they get their first true set of leaves! Now, that works for Columbus, Ohio. You obviously have a ton of success in zone 7 and know your conditions. That's very cool. |

| WOOOOOOOW! I am so excited for you, what a great looking bunch of babies you have,i did not know what to expect, now i do,it seems if you let them get bigger in their pots, they would be easire to plant out?I think i will try that, the thought of tiny little sprouts being put in the ground sounds like a lot of work, bigger seems a bit easier,IMO.never having done either,i am only guessing, :0) cAROL |

| Beautiful! I peek at mine every day! lol Tho I did get started WS'ing late in the game... didn't start til March. But I have some great seedlings already and I'm just so amazed how well the containers work as lil greenhouses! Happy Gardening! ~Wendy |

| i see alot of people worrying about their babies, my mom called me the other day to make sure i was gonna cover my plants, LOL i told her i didn't when it got that cold the other time and they did fine, all i do is watch their water intake, and make sure they are fine on that, but this is my first time, man moonphase!! yours looks sooooo awesome!! i hope mine turn out like yours!! :')) as soon as we get the stuff and our sq ft beds made they are going in, cuz by then it'll be the 21st, (last frost date here) :')) |

medontdo, normally,I would not worry about mine,If I had not opened the tops. Now that they are not all snug and I don't want to stuff them all back in and re-tape,I will be either covering them or bringing them in.Now they are calling for snow too Monday-here in Ga.it was 80 degrees yesterday.I hope it doesn't linger and kill alot like it did last year. That was the reason I refused to open mine early this year. The ones that have not been opened will stay out side.I am not worried about them.Guess moving the open ones will be the best thing for them and my peace of mind. moonphase |
