WooHoo! 'White Garden' will happen.

{{gwi:269655}}

Hibiscus moscheutos 'Blue River II'

I put out 49 cells of them on 4/14, after a 24-hour soak.

They started sprouting today!

These will be the backbone of a new front yard bed, as yet unbuilt, consisting of white-bloomers. So far, here's the list:

Hibiscus moscheutos 'Blue River II' (WS)

Buddleia davidii - unknown white bloomer (WS)

Buddleia davidii 'White Ball' (purchased-Bluestone)

Pieris japonica (WS)

Liatris spicata - unknown white bloomer (WS)

Leucanthemum x superbum 'Alaska' (WS)

Leucanthemum x superbum 'Becky' (purchased-Bluestone)

Leucanthemum x superbum 'Crazy Daisy' (WS)

Leucanthemum x superbum 'Silver Princess' (WS)

Leucanthemum x superbum 'Snow Lady' (WS)

Iberis sempervirens 'Snow Tuft' (WS)

Dianthus deltoides 'Arctic Fire' (WS)

Tanacetum niveum 'Jackpot' (WS)

Luzula nivea (WS)

Cortaderia selloana 'Pumila' (will be purchased)

Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Little Bunny' (purchased-Bluestone)

Allium tuberosum (WS)

Narcissus 'Professor Einstein' (purchased-Van Engelen)

Galanthus nivalis 'Flore Pleno' (purchased-Van Engelen)

Ornithogalum umbellatum (gathered from the lawn)

Hyacinthoides non-scripta - no-name white bloomer (purchased-Brecks)

There will likely be more ornamental grasses, because while their flowers start off in different colors, several fade to white as fall progresses.

I also expect to add more white flowering bulbs this fall, as well as some white Irises and Daylily varieties.

Any other suggestions gratefully considered, including annuals.

I can't believe you've winter sown so much! Wow! Wow! Wow! If you are thinking of something woody, the Diana Rose of Sharon has white flowers.

So, will the hibiscus boom this year?

The ones I have now "boomed" in their first year, and they were in half-gallon orange juice cartons, sitting on my boardwalk.

Hibiscus syriacus 'Diana' is a stunner. She definately goes on the list. I wonder if it can be grown from seed. It's triploid, so maybe not.

How about white Lunaria? It's blooming now.

    Looks like Phlox

Definitely white lunaria! How about datura?

OK, no more wine for me! But they could be booming. How big are the blooms? Do they make an impact? See? They boom!

    Hi Donn,

Nice list of plants. If I were you I'd include a couple of darker plants (in the purple or blue hues) to make the whites stand out. I read that somewhere and it makes sense to me.

We can't wait for the pictures of your latest project!

    How about:
    - Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle'?
    -Achillea ptarmica 'Angel's Breath'?
    -Leucanthemella serotina?

    :-)
Like it or not, they'll be on your doorstep tomorrow. lol. Unless they rot en route. :-(
I may send you Leucojum aestivum 'Gravetye Giant' if I can dig them up from their stronghold. :-)

Phlox 'David' will be nice. You'll need something with glauca leaves too.

There used to be some nice lists on the Moon Garden Forum.

Oh yes...How could I forget 'Annabelle?'

Lunaria is also now on the list.

I'll have to think about Feverfew. Maybe one of the double versions? Tanacetum 'Jackpot' is a pretty close cousin.

Hey Don, I did a moon garden and a white garden last year and both were beautiful. One of favs was Crepis rubra (White Hawk's Beard)'Snow White', also Nicotiana 'Fragrent Cloud" for height. Or if you really want height try Nicotiana sylvestris 'Peace Pipes'! How about Achillea 'The Pearl' or Chrysanthemum 'Coconut Ice'?

How about some shrubs with green & white variegation? I can think of the name right now, but that would support your white theme even when other flowers aren't bloomng.

    NICE!!
I second those Lunaria too. Those look great~
As for the Feverfew how about 'Flore Pleno' I have those and thought you posted a pic last year? I could be confused. They don't seem to make too many viable seed that I can tell and don't re-seed like the common feverfew do....I get one or two popping up at the most.
I'm looking at some cool looking early summer bearded iris in my AHS Plants For Every Season; called 'Bold Print'. They are early summer bloomers and are white edged with deep purple...very striking looking!!
For an early summer deciduous shrub how bout Deutzia gracilis?
As for annuals how about Calibrachoa (AKA Seaside Petunia), Nicotiana alata, Scabiosa atropurpurea and Zinnia?

Can't wait to see how it progresses!

Here's a third vote for lunearia! There's also a beautiful variegated, white-flowered form that comes true from seeds.

{{gwi:379494}} is a great, white flowered annual; and it's probably the one most fragrant plant in my garden.

Lilies would also be nice, maybe Lilium regale or Lilium candidum?

Keep the suggestions coming! I don't know if I'll get the thing started this year, but I can certainly keep collecting the plants.

I forgot about a couple of others I already have. Viburnum opulus 'Compactum' with two rooted cuttings in pots (If they survived winter...they have no new buds yet.). I also just received another one in Pit's care package.

And a RooterPot layering from a big old tree-form Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum that's been in my garden for at least 40 years, judging from it's size. This one wintered over in a large pot buried in wood chips, and it's budding like crazy.

How about some near-white daylilies? 'Gentle Shepherd,' 'Frozen Jade,' 'Winter Chill,' 'Joan Senior,' 'Miss Amelia,' 'So Lovely,' 'Sunday Gloves,' and the list goes on.

White lilacs (Common white lilacs; also 'Fiala's Remembrance,' 'Sister Justina,' and others. Here's a site selling seed for Syringa vulgaris 'Alba' - http://www.treehelp.com/shopping/product-detail.asp?Product_ID=2398)

White peonies (singles/Japanese formed ones are usually sturdy and weatherproof - perhaps you could try 'Krinkled White,' 'Requiem,' 'Le Jour,' 'Fairbanks,' or 'Jan Van Leeuwen')

Clematis 'Henryi,' 'Arctic Queen,' 'Lemon Chiffon'

    White California poppies.

White snapdragons! ('Rocket White' is my favorite variety)

    Dusty Miller.

    Artemisia.

    Acidanthera murielae (great fragrance!)

And of course, my favorite daffodil: Narcissus poeticus recurvus:

I have a black and white garden that I started last year. It is kind of a challenge because it's in dappled shade. We'll see how it looks this year as I have some perennials there.
As for white flowers, I have white Jacob's Ladder and baby's breath. Lavatera would be a nice addition (wonderful flower...seems to need a lot of pinching, though). I put Dusty Miller in mine because the foliage does look kind of white- but if you're a "purist" on this White Garden idea, that might not work for you.
I've also started three types of white Datura (hoping one will reseed for me next year) and Ipomea. And I have Venidium "Zulu" (which is white with the black and gold center)...also might not be good from a purist standpoint.

And...what about Gardenia?? If you feel like the challenge.
There's also perennial Baby's Breath (which I wound up with in my yard before I knew what it was). It's pretty, dependable, but kinda a thug here. But it does please the eye when in bloom or as a dried flower (it's a larger flower than annual Baby's breath).

Donn, I have feverfew "white ball" it is pure white and lovely. Don't have a photo this second, but it was WS last year and is fabby.
How about a white aster for later bloom? You need something for later in the year.
White betony is another suggestion. Stachys officinalis 'Alba', White betony
White balloon flowers (dwarf for your edge)
    candytuft (perennial, for edge)
Some white re-blooming iris (let me know, I can send)
    Nicotiana for the scent
Veronical longiflora in white (I bought one, mine didn't germinate and they are so nice).
non flowering lamb ears (Big Ears) to balanace the foliage color on a beautiful white dianthus I have "Itsaul's White" - the foliage is icey white/blue and the flowers pure white. I can save seeds if you'd like.)
White siberian iris (again, I have some) These bloom after the very early white bearded iris I have listed above, so nice in succession
White japanese roof iris: stunning when in bloom, the leaves provide a lovely garden accent!

    wonderful suggestions!
    moon vine.
i like chrysanthemum 'White City', but i would also add a small cushion white mum. (email me if you need cuttings).
    calla lilies
jelitto sells seeds for Dianthus Plumarius Alba, which has a wonderful scent. White dianthus barbatus (sweet william) would be lovely, too (but from collected seeds you cannot guarantee the white flowers).

    Donn,

You've got to try pennisetum villosum. Great accent grass with big white fluffs that bellows beautifully in the breeze. Too bad it's an annual, but worth the trouble of replanting year to year.

Thanks for all the great ideas. My list is getting huge!

Valiche..Pennisetum villosum 'White Ladies' is on my Jelitto seed order which never got placed this year. They call it hardy to zone 7, so I might get lucky.

No progress on the white garden as yet, but I have a new suspect for it. I bough 5 Persicaria polymorpha bareroots from Brent & Becky's sale. I potted them up and stuck them in the pot ghetto, and 4 of them outgrew it already. They've blooming with flowers which look like white Astilbe, and 2 are almost 3' tall already.

If this is the same thing I have, and I think it is, it's awesome. I have ONE on my corner in total drought full sun and it's huge! It's very beautiful. The foliage is succulent like balsam perhaps and the flowers are like astilbe. I have collected seed in the past and labled it "white thang" but I haven't tried to ws it.
