I'm sorry about your nephew.

You probably have plenty of time for tomatoes and squash. I'm farther north than you, but May 15 is our date and we get tomatoes and squash and beans just fine. Is the heat in July and August the issue (also early heat as far as tomato blossoms setting fruit)? I'd give it a whirl and plant anyway.

I am in the same zone as you, a bit further west. ACES recommendation for beans in our area is April to early May - I think you could get away with trying them. Plant the tomatoes, for sure - if you have big containers, you might try a couple in them - I've had limited success with that (upside down planter was a fail for me). If you need to plant them in the muddy area, can you amend the mud at all? Squash should be no problem at all to plant at this time.

Is Hospice involved yet? I'm a hospice physician and it's never too early to enlist the help of caring individuals who specialize in maximizing the function and comfort of those preparing for end-of-life. Most actually live longer on hospice than with active "treatment" due to the adequate control of symptoms and emotional/spiritual support.

And you definitely have time to plant the veggies--though I'd go with plants rather than from seed, at this point.
