Voles? I've been planting new sprouts among my more mature plants, and I'm amazed at how often I dig down into a huge hole. If your other plants are doing well in the same situation, I'd suspect something underground.

Naw.....not voles. It's a fairly crowded bed of perennials and this is the only plant. I suspect since it was the end of the row and more exposed it might of gotten a little frosted the other night. The one at the opposite end has more protection from the deck. Do you think?

Yup, I'd go with a bit of frost damage.

It's weird though, because the damage reminds me more of sun-scald....
